Games of Sept. 20-21, 2024
The Team of the Week, presented by Scoutware, is D3football.com's weekly honor roll, in its 26th season of recognizing the top performance at each position from the previous week. Players are nominated by schools.
Offense
QB Trevor Bopp, Sr., TCNJ
Bopp shattered his own TCNJ record with 553 passing yards in Saturday's 55-52 shootout loss at Muhlenberg, completing 27 of 42 passes and tossing five touchdowns. Heaveraged 13.2 yards per attempt and 20.5 yards per completion in a virtuosic performance, helping the Lions post their second-highest single-game total yardage (688) in program history.
OL Jeske Maples, Nick Fehrle, Jerred Durian, Sam Pryor, Ryan Kennelly, North Central
North Central enjoyed a balanced offensive attack with 300 yards and 15 first downs rushing and 329 yards and 15 first downs passing. The Cardinals did not have an offensive penalty in the game and gained at least 50 yards on nine of 13 possessions.
RB Tony Holden, Sr., Ursinus
Holden had a career night in the Bears' dominant 59-14 win over Rowan. He totaled 226 rushing yards on 18 carries, averaging 11.3 yards per carry, and scored three touchdowns. His 226 rushing yards were the most in a game by a Bears player since 2006.
RB De'Marion Brown, Fr., Gustavus Adolphus
Brown rushed 25 times for 218 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-10 Gustavus victory at UW-Stevens Point. His 218 rushing yards mark the 10th most in a single game in program history and the most by a freshman. His 218 yards are also the most by a Gustavus running back since Jeffrey Dubose set the single game record of 264 yards against Carleton in 2013.
WR Malin Jasinski, Sr., TCNJ
We rarely pick a quarterback and receiver from the same team, but Jasinski's line could not be ignored, as he posted the second-highest single-game receiving total in program history with 250 yards, hauling in two touchdowns - both from 66 yards out - among his 10 receptions. Jasinski, the first TCNJ player to record double-digit catches in three straight games, is the national leader in receptions (36) and receiving yards (541) through the season's first three games.
WR Scott Fraser, Sr., Grove City
Fraser set Grove City's single-game receiving yardage record Saturday in the Wolverines' 56-7 win at St. Vincent as he amassed 242 yards on 10 receptions. Fraser also scored twice. He had eight catches for 185 yards in the first half as Grove City won its 13th straight regular season game, the second-longest streak in program history.
TE Quamel Jarvis, Sr., Morrisville State
Jarvis collected 143 yards from scrimmage in a 28-27 loss to Catholic, registering 97 yards on seven receptions with a touchdown. He added 46 yards rushing on two carries for the Mustangs, with a long run of 31 yards. Jarvis' score came in the first quarter on a 32-yard TD pass to put Morrisville on the board.
Defense
DE Connor Carter, Sr., Ursinus
Carter led the Bears with 10 tackles (seven solo), three tackles for a loss, and two and a half sacks in the Bears' 59-14 win over Rowan on Saturday night. His final sack of the night in the third quarter also caused a safety. He broke up a pass as well and led an Ursinus defensive effort that limited Rowan to 105 total yards as a team.
DT John Stroughn, Sr., Utica
John Stroughn was a major thorn in the side, and the front of the Lycoming offensive line during Utica's 42-17 win. He recorded recording two tackles for loss and a sack as part of his four-tackle afternoon. Stroughn also altered the Warriors' offensive plans all day, recording four quarterback hurries.
DT D'Qavion Lemons, So., Centenary (La.)
Lemons recorded a team-leading eight total tackles and had a team-best two sacks with a team-high two tackles for loss in a 36-17 win against Austin College. Lemons also forced a fumble to lead a Gents' defense that recorded four sacks and forced four fumbles.
DE Caleb Sell, Sr., Linfield
Sell had three sacks in a 45-0 shutout win against Redlands, as part of a day where he had seven tackles (four solo) and four tackles for loss. He now has six and a half sacks on the season.
LB Durand Hill, Sr., Mary Hardin-Baylor
Hill totaled 10 tackles against No. 3 UW-Whitewater, adding one fumble recovery and one of the team's two pick-sixes. He helped the Cru limit the Warhawks to just three offensive points in a 25-17 victory.
LB Jaydin Miller, Sr., North Park
Miller forced a fumble in one of Millikin's only red zone chances on the afternoon, punching the ball out from behind to help preserve the shutout in a 44-0 win. Miller finished with six tackles, all solo, three tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumble and a pass breakup.
LB Ben Spiess, Sr., Salisbury
Spiess helped the No. 22 Sea Gulls shut out No. 8 Johns Hopkins in the second half soaring to a 41-13 victory on the road. Spiess tallied six total tackles with his biggest play coming late in the fourth quarter with a scoop-and-score touchdown from 26 yards out after a fumble recovery.
CB Jordy Tawa, Jr., Rochester
Tawa had another outstanding week in the defensive backfield for Rochester, helping the Yellowjackets move to 3-0 with a 28-6 victory over Salve Regina. He recorded his third interception of the season, stalling a SRU scoring drive by picking off a pass in the endzone. He added four total tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and also chipped in four pass breakups.
S Kyle Haettich, Sr., Brockport
Haettich put the final nails in the coffin in Brockport's 31-17 win over Wilkes. Haettich had two interceptions, both in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter. This included a 93-yard pick six which put the Golden Eagles up by 14. His second came with less than 10 seconds on the clock, to end the opponent's final possession. He also had five total tackles (three solo), including one tackle for a loss.
S Matt Jung, So., Bethel
Jung led the Royals with two interceptions and a game-high 10 tackles in a 51-30 victory over UW-Eau Claire. His second interception of the game came in the end zone, preventing a potential game-tying score. Five of his ten tackles were solo.
CB Taijay Brown, Jr., Lebanon Valley
Brown returned a fumble 42 yards for a touchdown to seal a 40-24 victory at Eastern.
Special teams
K Jax Rodriguez, Fr., McMurry
Rodriguez was a perfect 4-of-4 on extra points and drilled a 52-yard field goal in the War Hawks' 31-10 conference victory over Texas Lutheran.
P Kaden Finnestad, Jr., Rockford
Finnestad averaged 53.3 yards per punt on the road against Benedictine. All of his punts traveled at least 40 yards, including a 56-yard punt that was downed at the 9, and a 68-yard punt.
ST CJ Childs, Jr., Castleton
Childs blocked a pair of kicks on Saturday, first stuffing a punt against Mass Maritime before breaking around the edge to block a PAT that was returned the other way by a teammate for a two-point conversion. Childs now has three blocked kicks this season through three games and has seven career blocked kicks in 13 games.
RET Jaden AlfanoStJohn, Sr., Cortland
AlfanoStJohn returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to give Cortland its first score and cut an early deficit to 14-7 in the second-ranked Red Dragons' eventual 40-38 win at 11th-ranked Susquehanna. He's only the third player in school history, and the first since 2003, to return a kickoff 100 yards. AlfanoStJohn finished with five kickoff returns for 193 yards on the game.
