Games of Sept. 5-8, 2024

The Team of the Week, presented by Scoutware, is D3football.com's weekly honor roll, in its 26th season of recognizing the top performance at each position from the previous week. Players are nominated by schools.

Offense

QB Kaden Brown, Fr., East Texas Baptist

In less than three quarters of play, Brown completed 26 of 30 passes, throwing for 315 yards and four touchdowns, while running for 70 yards and a score as well. He had touchdown passes of 35 yards, 9 yards, 8 yards, and 15 yards in a 57-12 win against LaGrange.

OL Jayden Sutton, Evan Oberg, John Pekar, Alex Pethan, Roary Jones, UW-Whitewater

The Warhawks played just seven offensive lineman in a 34-7 win over John Carroll, with Aaron Johnson and Jacob Seeger also seeing action. The line allowed zero sacks on 28 dropback while UW-Whitewater posted 439 yards of total offense including 286 on the ground. In 70 plays, the line did not commit a single penalty and the Warhawks were forced to punt just one time in the contest.

RB Michael Zrelak, Jr., Gettysburg

Zrelak turned in a career day to lead the Bullets' offensive onslaught in a 61-41 win at Juniata. He racked up 214 yards rushing and four touchdowns on just 10 carries. It was the first time a Gettysburg player had run for more than 200 since Ted Delia ran for 244 against Susquehanna on Sept. 24, 2011. Zrelak had three runs of 50 yards or longer, including a 67-yard touchdown scamper for the team's longest rush since 2016.

RB Hunter Wolfley, Sr., Juniata

Wolfley had a huge week as he ran for a career-high 223 yards and four touchdowns on just 18 carries in the team's 61-41 loss to Gettysburg.

WR Evan Liggett, Sr., Whitworth

Liggett caught eight passes for a career-high 183 yards, including touchdowns of 36, 39 and 43 yards. He also had an interception while playing safety on the final play of the first half, which he returned 37 yards.

WR Za'Cameron Brice, Sr., Dubuque

Brice caught 13 passes for 173 yards and three touchdowns for Dubuque in a 33-21 loss to No. 15 Aurora.

TE Derek Hansen, Sr., St. Olaf

Hansen caught six passes for 90 yards and three touchdowns for St. Olaf in a 39-21 season-opening win at Northwestern (Minn.). He hauled in scoring catches of 15 and 6 yards in the first half before giving the Oles a two-score lead with 7:29 to go in the game with a 40-yard touchdown catch late on. The three-touchdown game was the first by an Ole since Sept. 10, 2016.

Defense

DE Jacquez Mabin, So., Delaware Valley

Jacquez Mabin led the DelVal defensive unit in a 41-21 victory over Hampden-Sydney. He tallied a team-leading 13 total tackles, give tackles for loss (54 yards), and a pair of sacks for 47 yards. He also found the endzone with a scoop and score fumble recovery, at the time boosting the Aggies' lead to 27-7 in the third.

DT Cameron Monette, Sr., Fitchburg State

Monette totaled 11 tackles on three solo stops and eight assisted tackles as well as four sacks and three and a half tackles for loss in the Falcons' 12-0 season opening triumph over Dean.

DT Chance Knight, Sr., Marietta

Knight led a Pioneer defense that limited St. John Fisher to just 6 first downs, 35 yards rushing and 103 total yards of offense in a 55-0 win. He recorded three sacks and spent a good portion of the game in the Fisher backfield while only playing two and a half quarters as the starters were pulled midway through the third quarter.

DE Amarion Williams, Jr., Bethany

Williams set career-highs in tackles (15), tackles for loss (five and a half), quarterback hurries (four), and sacks (three) in a 20-14 loss to Allegheny. The 5.5 tackles for loss were the most by a player in the Presidents' Athletic Conference since October 8, 2022.

LB Gage Timm, Jr., UW-River Falls

Timm led the Falcons to their second season-opening upset win over a top-10 ranked opponent, taking down No. 7-ranked Alma on the road. Timm set a career-high with 20 tackles (nine solo, two and a half tackles for lsos), UWRF's most since by an individual since 2019.

LB Sam Tourangeau, So., Ithaca

Tourangeau started off the 2024 season on a strong note as he recorded 13 total tackles, including one for a loss, two pass breakups, forced fumble and fumble recovery in a 27-23 loss to No. 8 Johns Hopkins.

LB Joey Alvarez, So., Rockford

Alvarez posted a career-high and tied Rockford's single-game record with 19 tackles, including 15 solo stops, and one and a half tackles for loss. He also intercepted a pass, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble which led to an RU touchdown.

CB Dylan DeHoop, Fr., Calvin

DeHoop helped make Calvin's football debut a successful one, as he intercepted two passes, including one in the end zone, in the Knights' inaugural game as a football program - a 50-6 win over Oberlin. DeHoop finished with three tackles, all solo.

S Jacob Korrodi, Sr., Howard Payne

Korrodi recorded a game-high 15 tackles in a loss to No. 16 Hardin-Simmons. Of the 15 tackles, nine were solo.

S Daniel McKeirnan, Sr., Whitworth

McKeirnan's two first half interceptions kept Gustavus at bay, helping Whitworth take a 13-0 halftime lead, which ended up as a 40-7 road victory. He added three tackles. Whitworth held the Gusties to 290 yards after Gustavus averaged 470 yards and 36 points per game last season.

CB Jacob Wilson, Fr., Centenary (La.)

Wilson had a pair of interceptions on Saturday night in the Gents' season-opening loss at home to Hendrix. His second pick of the game led to a Centenary TD two plays later. Wilson finished with two solo tackles to go with his two picks.

Special teams

K Tim Kissinger, Sr., Lebanon Valley

Kissinger broke the Lebanon Valley school record with a 56-yard field goal in the season opener at Franklin & Marshall. He was also 1-for-1 on extra point. Kissinger kicked his school record field goal as time expired in the second quarter to give the Dutchmen some momentum heading into halftime.

P Noah Steveler, Sr., Carroll

Streveler played a key role in Carroll's 28-16 win at UW-Stout, which marked the program's first win against a WIAC team since 1978. He averaged 44.7 yards per punt, landing three of his seven inside the 20.

RET Andrae' Green, Jr., Gallaudet

Green, who led NCAA Division III in kickoff return average last season, picked up where he left off as he fielded two kickoffs for 130 yards and one touchdown. Green scored Gallaudet's only points on an 89-yard kickoff return for a TD in the third quarter in GU's 17-6 loss at Albright. He also had a 41-yard return in the game.

ST Tristan Smith, Jr., Texas Lutheran

Smith blocked a punt that he recovered and returned for a touchdown in Saturday night's win against then-No. 13 Trinity. Midway through the first quarter after both teams had exchanged punts, Smith burst through the line, blocked a Trinity punt and then scooped the ball up and rambled 12 yards to paydirt to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead, a lead they never relinquished.
