The Lake Forest College football team hosted and defeated Wisconsin Lutheran College 21-7 on Saturday in the season opener for both programs.
Senior Joshua Gasca began his first season as the Foresters' starting quarterback by throwing three touchdown passes without an interception. He was 21-for-32 with 257 yards and connected with senior wide receiver Tee Land on a 15-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, senior tight end Bode Rubright on a 6-yarder in the third, and senior wideout Langston Metoyer on a 23-yard score early in the fourth.
Rubright's touchdown was the first of his career and he was one of nine Foresters with a reception in the contest. Land had a team-high five catches and graduate student A.J. Jackson led the squad with 78 yards on just three receptions.
Lake Forest's running game was also effective with senior tailbacks Mal Chunn, Jayce Knudson, and Wilson Buckley combining for 131 yards on 33 carries.
Whe Warriors, meanwhile, had just 13 yards rushing against the Forester defense. Sophomore linebacker Blake Ware paced the home team with six tackles while junior cornerback Dematris Azcueta added five. Sophomore defensive lineman Preston Mosher accounted for two of Lake Forest's three sacks, including one that forced a fumble.
Three Foresters had interceptions in the game. Junior safety Thomas DeChesaro raised his career total to five in the first quarter, senior linebacker Nik Reick now has seven after ending a Wisconsin Lutheran drive in the the third quarter, and freshman Brandon Henderson returned his 48 yards to midfield on the final play of the afternoon.
Lake Forest out-gained the Warriors 389-212 and the visitors' only touchdown of the day made the score 14-7 with 14:13 to play. Metoyer's touchdown reception came 40 seconds later and turned out to be the final score.
The Foresters will open Midwest Conference play against Illinois College at home next Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
