Hampden-Sydney Wins On The Road At Bridgewater 28-21

More news about: Hampden-Sydney

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Junior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) passed for a game-high 241 yards and three touchdowns, and sophomore running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) rushed for a game-high and career-high 195 yards, as Hampden-Sydney College took a 28-21 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football road win at Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon in Bridgewater. Redshirt-freshman wide receiver Manning Lasso (Raleigh, NC) had 57 yards receiving and two touchdowns—his third consecutive game with two touchdowns, while senior linebacker and team captain Brendan Wallace (Virginia Beach) had a game-high 10 tackles, including nine solo and two for loss. The visiting Tigers (5-3, 3-2) never trailed against the host Eagles (5-3, 3-2), leading 10-0 after one quarter, 17-7 at halftime and 20-14 after three quarters en route to the triumph.

"I'm really proud of our guys and how they competed for 60 minutes," said first-year head coach Vince Luvara. "They trusted the process today and came together and found a way."

H-SC set the tone of the contest quickly, forcing BC to punt after five plays on the first possession of the day. The Tigers took their first possession and promptly drove 83 yards on 12 plays with Sido finding Manning Lasso for a 20-yard touchdown pass at 7:58 of the first quarter. Senior placekicker Elijah Swett (Matthews, NC) added the first of his two PAT kicks for the early 7-0 advantage. Keys to the score were runs of 13 and 12 yards by Hicks, who had 35 yards rushing on the drive, along with pass plays of 14 yards each to sophomore wide receiver Ethan Dowdy (Powhatan) and junior wide receiver Jordan Jackson (Fredericksburg).

The Garnet & Grey came up with a defensive turnover on the Eagles' next possession when senior free safety Joseph Pierre (Mobile, AL) made an interception and returned it 51 yards to the BC 22-yard line. The visitors did have to settle for a 38-yard field goal by Swett for a 10-0 lead with 43-seconds left in the opening quarter.

H-SC's defense forced another turnover on the next possession, this time on downs, taking over on its own 19-yard line and driving 81 yards on nine plays with Sido connecting with senior tight end Sutton Lasso (Raleigh, NC) for a seven-yard touchdown pass at 9:33 of the second quarter and a 17-0 advantage. Keys to the drive were a 40-yard completion from Sido to Dowdy, along with a 10-yard reception by Hicks, who also added 11 yards on the ground.

The Eagles finally got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter when Jaicere Bateman found Kyle Beck for a three-yard touchdown pass with only 28-seconds on the clock. Jack Hendren added the first of his three PAT kicks for the 17-7 margin at halftime.

H-SC added another field goal on its first possession of the second half, a season-long 40-yard kick by Swett at 11:02 for a 20-7 lead. The eight-play, 50-yard drive included a 37-yard run by Hicks as well as a 12-yard reception by senior wide receiver Austin Fernandez (Warrenton).

BC responded with another touchdown at 5:26 of the third quarter, a 17-yard scoring pass from Bateman to Jacob Perdue, and it was 20-14 after three quarters.

The Tigers scored again early in the fourth quarter when Sido and Manning Lasso connected yet again—the sixth touchdown pass involving the duo in the last three games—this time on an 18-yard pass play with 13:10 left to play for a 28-14 advantage. It was a nine-play, 62-yard possession that included an 11-yard run by Hicks, along with receptions of 13 yards by Manning Lasso and 14 yards by Dowdy.

H-SC forced a BC punt and another turnover on downs before the Eagles scored a late touchdown at 2:29 of the final quarter when Bateman connected with Jamel Johnson on a 10-yard scoring pass that ultimately provided for the final margin of victory for the visitors. The Tigers did miss a 40-yard field goal attempt with 5:18 on the clock, but the Garnet & Grey also took a pair of kneel downs to end the game after Hicks had runs of 12 yards and 55 yards to secure first downs and run out the clock on the final possession—Hicks himself sliding down at the two-yard line on his 55-yard run … that he could have scored on, if he wanted.

Sido passed for his game-high 241 yards (24-32-0) and three touchdowns with no interceptions for H-SC, adding 19 yards rushing, and he has not thrown an interception in four-straight games. Hicks rushed for his game-high and career-high 195 yards on a career-high 26 attempts (7.5), adding four receptions for 45 yards. Dowdy had a game-high 93 yards receiving on eight receptions. Manning Lasso had his 57 yards receiving on five receptions and two touchdowns, while older brother Sutton Lasso had 17 yards receiving on three receptions and one touchdown. Sophomore punter Camden Richardson (Midlothian) averaged 41.5 yards on two punts, including a long of 45 yards. Junior running back Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) averaged 24.3 yards on three kick returns, including a long return of 38 yards.

Wallace finished with his game-high 10 tackles for the Tigers, including nine solo tackles, one for loss, one pass breakup and two QB hurries. Junior strong safety Markevus Graves-Franklin (Lynchburg) had seven tackles, freshman linebacker Frank Brewer (Charlotte, NC) had six tackles and freshman defensive end Jordan Williams (Washington, DC) had five tackles, 1.5 for loss, 0.5 sacks and one QB hurry. Junior cornerback James Townsend (Hardeeville, SC) and freshman cornerback Parks Cromwell (Charlotte, NC) each finished with four tackles with Townsend adding a tackle for loss and two pass breakups, and Cromwell adding a pass breakup. Pierre contributed three tackles along with his interception and 51-yard return.

Bateman passed for 229 yards (23-39-1) and three touchdowns with one interception for BC, adding 38 yards rushing. Beck had 60 yards receiving on five receptions and one touchdown. Aaron Moore had eight tackles for the Eagles.

H-SC will play on the road again next week at ODAC member Shenandoah University on Saturday, November 9, at 1 p.m. in Winchester. The Tigers and Hornets (6-2, 3-2) are currently in a three-way tie (with BC) for third place in the conference standings after today.
