Wrap: Auggies upend Gusties

Tyrone Wilson comes down with the catch on Augsburg's last gasp.

Augsburg turned the final seconds on their head as they went the length of the field to defeat Gustavus. Meanwhile, Rochester finished in the black up on the blue, FDU-Florham avoided the upset, Salve Regina got welcomed to the NEWMAC and more in the early wrapup of games involving teams not in the D3football.com Top 25.

In a performance reminiscent of an upset win at St. John's 12 years ago, Augsburg went 57 yards in 21 seconds to get past Gustavus Adolphus 33-31. The Gusties, playing their Homecoming game, had scored with just 22 seconds left. They drew a defensive pass interference call against Augsburg on fourth down in the end zone, then used the extra life to give George Sandven a chance to find Caden Kleinschmidt in single coverage in the end zone for a 31-27 lead.

But as it turned out, that was too much time. The 2011 Auggies needed only 18 seconds to go 80 yards to defeat St. John's and come away with a 32-31 win. This year's Auggies got a kickoff return out to the 43-yard line, where Cade Sheehan went to work. He hit Michael Ims over the middle for a 23-yard gaine and a first down, then right away, found Tyrone Wilson in the right corner of the end zone for the 33-31 lead with one second left. Augsburg kneeled out the extra point, and Gustavus's attempt at a lateral miracle nearly resulted in another Augsburg touchdown on the final play.

Sheehan completed 20 of 25 passes for 275 yards and all five Augsburg touchdowns. Dominic Smith caught three, while Wilson had the other two.

It's not even the only time that Augsburg has beaten Gustavus on a Hail Mary in the D3football.com era. The Auggies scored a 26-24 win at Gustavus on Sept. 15, 2012, when Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from multiple-time D3football.com All-Region quarterback Ayrton Scott on the final offensive play of the game.

Union improved to 4-0, limiting Montclair State to 175 yards of total offense in a 43-7 win for the Garnet Chargers. Senior Donovan Pacatte went 22-for-35 and 273 passing yards with two touchdowns for Union, finding Landers Green and Robbie Tolbert. Union also got a pick-six from Jaden Duncan and blocked a field goal.

Rochester improved to 3-1 on the season, defeating University of New England 29-27 in double overtime, bringing an end to the Nor'easters perfect start to the season in a game on the blue turf up in Maine. The Yellowjackets converted on a double-overtime two-point conversion from Ryan Rose to Trey Johnson which proved to be the difference. The conversion happened after Rochester took the lead after a Rose to Aidan Papantonis 5-yard score to start the second extra period. After UNE scored a touchdown in just two plays in their turn on offense, quarterback Jarrett Henault couldn't connect to AJ DeFilio in the flat on the two-point try, with Jordy Tawa providing the coverage for the Yellowjackets, sealing the victory.

Albright trailed 7-6 midway through the fourth quarter with eyes on snapping a 20-game losing streak. But on a rainy day in Reading, Pa., it was FDU-Florham which got the one more score needed to put the game away. Albright punted away after a three-and-out and Florham took over on the 50, and on the second play of the drive, Ryon Thomas ran for 47 yards and a touchdown to make it 14-6. Albright did get into FDU territory, but had a fourth down pass fail at the Devils 26.

Ben Butler intercepted the first play from scrimmage and his team never looked back North Park shut out a CCIW opponent for the first time since 1992, defeating Millikin 38-0. Matt Eck threw four touchdown passes for North Park, two of them to Jakob Dreksler, who had touchdown catches on both of his receptions on the afternoon. Jaydin Miller had nine tackles, seven of them solo, including three sacks and an interception. Millikin had just one snap on the day inside the North Park 30. The Vikings improved to 2-1.

Carroll remained undefeated, as they held the pedal to the metal from start to finish, en route to a 70-23 victory over Illinois Wesleyan. That is just six points shy of the team's single game scoring record, and is the most points the program has scored in a game since setting that record against Lawrence in 2014. The Pioneers also finished with 564 yards of total offense on Saturday, just three shy of the school record. IWU (1-2, 1-1) managed 436 yards of offense, but turned the ball over four times.

Central shook off a lackluster second quarter and dominated the second half to defeat Luther 41-16 on Saturday afternoon. The win was the 150th in the career of Dutch head coach Jeff McMartin. McMartin, in his 20th season at his alma mater, is 150-47 (.747) for his career and is the 11th active Division III coach to reach the 150-win mark. Central gave up 51 of Luther's 86 rushing yards on one late fourth-quarter play, while the Dutch rushed for 205 and threw for 205 yards on the day.

Salve Regina's first game as a conference member of the NEWMAC was a successful one, as the Seahawks got four takeaways and John Hannon got two breakaway touchdown catches to lift Salve past MIT, 34-7 on the road. Quarterback Jake Stack struggled a bit in the first half for Salve, going 9-for-21 passing, but was 9-for-14 after intermission, including a 68-yard touchdown to Hannon, who got well behind the Engineers' defense. Hannon also had a 29-yard TD in the first half and a 28-yard reception on which he made an amazing breakaway catch, but lost his footing on the way down. Hannon finished with four catches for 146 yards, while Andre Sullivan caught seven passes for 100 yards.

Chartellis Reece ran for 178 yards and two touchdowns as Tufts defeated Bates in front of 4,166 fans on a drizzly Homecoming night. Reece, a junior, came into the season with a grand total of eight carries for his career. He played the previous game at linebacker, making five tackles. Michael Berluti completed 12 of 19 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown and added 75 yards rushing with another score.

John Peduzzi hauled in three touchdown receptions to help guide Washington & Jefferson to a 56-14 win over visiting Thiel in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup. It's the 17th consecutive win for W&J against the Tomcats, dating to a 38-35 home loss to Thiel on Oct. 1, 2005. The Presidents held Thiel to 135 total yards and just 1-for-15 on third down.

Framingham State got a blocked field goal attempt by Jared Martino in the final seconds to hold on for a 9-8 victory over Westfield State. Framingham started the scoring with a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter before Westfield answered with a touchdown and the two point conversion. Adeboye Oyaronbi recovered an Owl fumble early in the fourth quarter to set up the Rams scoring drive. Elijah Nichols lateraled to Devaun Ford who found Manny Lara down the sideline for a 54-yard gain into Owl territory. Nichols and Ford connected for 22 yards moving the ball into the red zone. Ford capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. The Rams went for two and failed giving them the 9-8 lead with 6:59 to play.

The Owls' final possession of the game started with 3:57 to play and converted a fourth-and-3 at the Rams 40. Passes of 7 and 18 yards by Fernandez moved the ball down to the 15-yard line. The Owls opted to run the clock down to under 10 seconds and attempted a 32-yard field goal that Martino blocked with two seconds remaining.
