Week 9 wrap: Colonials snap long streak

Western Connecticut will leave the NJAC after this season but does not go out the door winless.

Western Connecticut snapped a 28-game losing streak as the Colonials defeated Montclair State 20-14 in overtime. After Montclair missed a 44-yard field goal in its overtime possession, Will Arndt hit Marquies Highsmith for a 24-yard pass and Octavius McKoy put it in the end zone one play later for the winning six.

Baldwin Wallace took advantage of great field position all day and rolled to a 66-14 win against winless Marietta. Ryan O'Rourke threw for four touchdowns on just 11-for-14 passing. The Yellow Jackets host No. 1 Mount Union next week.

Logan Turner threw for 685 yards and eight touchdows as Hardin-Simmons and Sul Ross State put up record offensive numbers in a game Hardin-Simmons won 85-42. The Cowboys compiled 914 yards, erasing their rival McMurry from the Division III record book on that count, and the teams combined for 1,714 yards of offense, obliterating the previous mark of 1,430 held by the 2009 Eureka-Crown game and setting the overall NCAA football mark as well.

Buffalo State took its first lead of the day on a 16-yard catch and run by Rich Pete with just 33 seconds remaining, as the Bengals scratched out a 27-24 victory over Hartwick. Concordia-Chicago remained unbeaten, scoring 19 second-half points in a 26-13 win at Benedictine. Lake Forest, whose only loss is to Concordia-Chicago, defeated Ripon 17-7 to improve to 8-1. The Foresters face St. Norbert in Week 11 after a bye next week for a chance to secure the Midwest Conference automatic bid.

Quarterback Mason Blaschke rushed for 221 yards as Trinity (Texas) knocked Millsaps from the ranks of the once-beaten teams with a 35-21 win in San Antonio. The Tigers beat their former SCAC rivals with the help of 212 all-purpose yards from Matthew Kennemer, who caught a touchdown pass and set up another with a 61-yard kick return. Also in the South, Louisiana College rallied to beat Texas Lutheran, 44-37, in overtime.

Jesse Baldassare rushed for 107 yards, and Jeremy Meier and Matt Dunn each went over 100 receiving as Utica dominated Alfred, 31-7. The Pioneers moved into a tie with Salisbury atop the Empire 8, given the Sea Gulls' loss to Ithaca, setting up a showdown this coming Saturday in Maryland. Utica QB Andrew Benkwitt's 364 yards gave him his sixth 300-yard passing game of the season, and he has a seventh with 299 yards.

Hampden-Sydney and Washington and Lee each rolled to wins, setting up a battle for first place in the ODAC next weekend. H-SC got 309 yards and five touchdowns from Nash Nance, two of them to Holton Walker, who caught 10 passes for 170 yards in the 68-24 win against Guilford. And W&L ran for 442 yards, hitting on 13 of its 15 third- and fourth-down conversions in a 41-14 win at Catholic. Nick Lombardo ran for 168 yards on 17 carries and Sasha Vandalov added 101 and two scores on his 16 carries in the win.

James Clay carried 45 times for 172 yards, giving up 1,739 through eight games, but his two touchdowns weren't enough to lift Mount St. Joseph, which lost to Rose-Hulman, 28-21, in overtime.

Kenyon, which was coming off consecutive 0-10 seasons, beat Allegheny, 20-7, and improved to 5-3 on the season, and 4-1 in the NCAC. The Lords, which play neither Wabash nor Wittenberg this season, are part of a logjam with Ohio Wesleyan (a 33-14 victor over the Lords two weeks ago) and Wabash in the conference standings. Wittenberg is 3-1 in conference play.

Juniata had seven sacks and picked up its second win of the season, beating McDaniel, 24-7. The Eagles have two shots to get win No. 3, which would be their most in a season since going 3-7 2003. The two wins is Juniata's most since 2006.

Northwestern (Minn.) held Eureka's Sam Durley to 219 yards passing and picked him off three times in a 21-17 win. The Eagles stand atop the conference with one game left and need to beat Greenville next week to wrap up the UMAC automatic bid.

Ben Crick ran for 158 yards and Evan Bunker added 141 as Trinity (Conn.) took control in the NESCAC with a 45-7 win over Middlebury. The Bantams held McCallum Foote to 133 yards passing and sacked the star quarterback three times. Crick had three scores of 40 yards or longer -- runs of 66 and 49 yards, and a 40-yard reception from Ryan Burgess. The 6-0 Bantams' final two opponents, Wesleyan and Amherst each remained a game behind at 5-1. The Lord Jeffs held the ball for 37 minutes and ran for 200 yards in a 51-7 win over Tufts, while the Cardinals rushed for 284 yards and rallied from a 14-0 deficit in a 34-14 defeat of Bowdoin.

Framingham State held Coast Guard to 18 yards rushing in a 39-3 victory that kept the Rams in control of the NEFC's Bogan Division. Salve Regina defeated Plymouth State 31-0 to clinch a berth in the NEFC Championship game.

Castleton State won its fifth game in a row, beating Gallaudet, 28-20, to set up an Nov. 10 ECFC title showdown with Mount Ida, which outrushed Becker 278-(minus-8) in a 55-7 win. For the Spartans, Shane Brozowski threw for a touchdown with 22 seconds left in the first half to cut into a 20-7 deficit, and added two second-half touchdown passes and finished with 338 passing yards.

Christopher Newport won at North Carolina Wesleyan, 17-10, to stay out in front in the USA South, while Ferrum kept pace with the Captains with a 35-12 win at Greensboro.

Mike Theismann missed a 28-yard field goal at the end of regulation, but the St. Scholastica kicker redeemed himself with a 25-yard game-winner in overtime, as the Saints outlasted Presentation, 20-17.
