  • Hobart hands RPI its first loss, 10-9

    The Hobart College football team blocked an extra point attempt late in the fourth quarter to preserve a one-point lead over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Statesmen defense made it stand up down the stretch for a 10-9 Liberty League victory. The Statesmen improved to 5-1 overall, 1-1 in conference, while the Engineers suffered their first loss, dropping to 6-1, 2-1.

    Hobart College Head Football Coach Kevin DeWall '00 recently announced that Cait Finn will join his coaching staff as a defensive assistant coach for the 2019 season. Finn also works full time at Hobart and William Smith Colleges as the assistant director of the Centennial Center for Leadership. Finn is the first woman to coach football at Hobart.

    Hobart College Interim Director of Athletics Brian Miller announced today that Kevin DeWall '00 has been appointed the 24th head coach of the Statesmen football program. DeWall will be the first alum to lead Hobart on the gridiron since Francis L. "Babe" Kraus '24 guided the program in 1942. The 2000 Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year, DeWall received a bachelor's degree in biology at Hobart, earning Dean's List honors in each of his four years on campus where he was a member of the Orange Key and Druid honor societies.

Hobart only allowed the Engineers to reach the red zone twice and both times the visitors came away empty handed.

    Hobart senior quarterback Shane Sweeney and a stout defense led the Statesmen to a 34-17 victory over Endicott College on Boswell Field this afternoon. He threw for 321 yards and four touchdowns, breaking a career record and matching another. Sweeney was 22-of-32 passing, raising his career completions total to 472, eclipsing the old standard of 455 held by Shawn Mizro '07. Sweeney also pulled even with Mizro with career touchdown pass No. 61. Sweeney will head into next week's game with 5,965 career passing yards, 132 short of Mizro's record.

Junior quarterback Shane Sweeney threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Brandon Shed pulled in five passes for a game-high 132 yards and two touchdowns.
