GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College football team pitched a shutout on defense and scored on seven of its final 10 possessions to score a 41-0 victory over Morrisville State College this afternoon. It's the Statesmen's first shutout since Oct. 7, 2017, when they blanked Rensselaer 30-0.
Hobart (2-0) used a balanced, swarming defense to corral the Mustangs (0-2). Only three Morrisville State drives advanced across midfield and none reached the red zone. The visitors' deepest push into Statesmen territory was snuffed out at the Hobart 31 early in the second quarter when linebacker Dante Kimbrough intercepted Alek Britten and returned it 31 yards to the Mustangs' 41. Eight plays later, Rob DiGregorio booted a 22-yard field goal to open the day's scoring. Kimbrough was credited with three tackles, including one for a loss, to go with his interception. Linebacker CJ Calero led Hobart with eight tackles.
Hobart forced a three-and-out to hand the ball back to the offense just over a minute later. Running back Rayshawn Boswell scored on a 5-yard run to cap off a nine-play, 50-yard scoring drive, sending the Statesmen into halftime with a 10-0 lead.
Hobart scored on its first two possessions of the second half, stretching its lead to 24-0 midway through the third quarter. The first scoring drive was set up by the defense. Which pressured punter Hunter Regels into abandoning his kick attempt and throwing an incompletion instead, setting Hobart up with a short field at the Morrisville State 25. Four plays later, running back Tim Denham Jr. raced to the pylon from 6-yards out for a 17-0 lead. He finished the game with 86 yards on 19 carries.
After another Mustang three-and-out, the Statesmen used four plays to cover 63 yards, the final 34 on a completion from quarterback David Krewson to Boswell for a 24-0 lead. Boswell rushed for a game-high 96 yards and caught two passes for 34 yards.
Hobart scored on all three of its fourth quarter possessions to put the game out of reach. DiGregorio added a second field goal, this one from 23 yards, quarterback Joseph Pelletier threw an 18-yard TD to wide receiver Alex LaBella and running back Frank Riggio took his first career carry on Boswell Field 8-yards to the end zone for his first collegiate TD.
Morrisville State was just 2-of-15 on the day on third down, recording just 112 yards. Running back Savion Williams had a team-high 27 yards on the ground, all six of his carries came in the fourth quarter. Linebacker Joe Miller-Labar produced a game-high 13 tackles for the Mustangs.
Including last week's 35-3 win at Alfred, the Statesmen have allowed the fewest points to start a season, since opening the 2005 campaign with back-to-back shutouts of Dickinson (21-0) and Franklin & Marshall (34-0).
Hobart will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 18 when the Statesmen visit St. John Fisher College (2-0). Kickoff at Growney Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
