Games of Oct. 28-29, 2022

The Team of the Week, presented by Scoutware, is D3football.com's weekly honor roll, in its 24th season of recognizing the top performance at each position from the previous week. Players are nominated by schools.

Offense

QB Cade Sheehan, So., Augsburg

Sheehan completed 24 of 35 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for a score to lead Augsburg to its third straight win, a 38-35 triumph over Concordia-Moorhead. Sheehan claimed his third four-touchdown passing game of the season and seventh game with four or more touchdown passes in his career with Saturday's effort. He also rushed 14 times for 63 yards and a 4-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

OL Ciaran Hourihan, Blair Horning, Nick Swift, Izzy Lobin, Travis Cepalia, Tufts

The Jumbos line dominated in a win over Hamilton, helping running back Tyler Johnson go for a career-high 148 yards on the ground as the team rushed for 224 yards. The team also tossed for 380 yards, as the 606 total yards were the third-most ever at Tufts. The offensive line allowed just one sack for a loss of 1 yard, and averaged nearly 9 yards per play Saturday.

RB Ashton Capone, Jr., Cortland

Capone, making his first start of the season, ran 47 times for 282 yards, both Cortland single-game records, and scored two touchdowns in the Red Dragons' 31-8 win at Alfred. The victory clinched Cortland's second consecutive Empire 8 title and NCAA tournament automatic berth. Capone ran for a 2-yard score late in the first half to give Cortland a 14-0 lead, and his 5-yard TD run on his final carry with 2:09 remaining gave him the school rushing yardage record, which was previously 281 yards.

RB Keyshaun Pete, Jr., Methodist

Pete rushed for a career-high 226 yards in the win over Southern Virginia this past Saturday. His three rushing touchdowns match his career-high. The junior averaged 8.1 yards per carry.

WR Zachary Kim, So., Kenyon

Kim finished Saturday's game against DePauw with nine catches for 280 yards and four touchdown receptions, breaking the Kenyon record for receiving yards in a game. Kim's output was a single yard more than Chris Myers, who racked up 279 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 1969 against Centre. Kim's four touchdown catches are now tied for second in program history behind only Myers.

WR Dom Shepardson, Sr., Coe

Coe's leading receiver kept up his excellent season, helping Coe to a 37-31 victory over Central. He recorded a career-high 143 yards and tied his career-high with a team-leading 11 receptions. Shepardson worked himself open all afternoon and recorded his sixth touchdown catch of the season. The TD catch was one of his best in 2022, catch a short pass along the sideline before juking a pair of Dutch defenders and sprinting to the end zone.

TE Cole Hissong, Sr., Wooster

Hissong caught the winning touchdown with 11 seconds remaining in Wooster's 44-43 win over archrival Wittenberg. The touchdown reception bumped the preseason All-American over 100 yards for the game. The win marked Wooster's first over Wittenberg since 2008, one in which the Scots overcame a 33-7 deficit.

Defense

DE Zach Newberg, Jr., WPI

Newberg registered a trio of sacks to propel the WPI football team to hard-earned 20-15 win versus Norwich. He finished with six tackles overall, including four solo stops and accounted for three of the Crimson and Gray's four sacks on the day. Newberg's final sack stymied the Cadets' last grasp drive in the final minute and helped secure the Engineers first NEWMAC victory of 2022.

DT Donaven Juarez, Sr., Wartburg

Juarez had four tackles, all of them solo, including two tackles for loss as Wartburg broke an 80-year old school record with its fifth shutout of the season. The Knights beat Buena Vista 65-0.

DT Brandon Kolgen, Sr., UW-Oshkosh

Kolgen had a career-high eight total tackles on Saturday against then No. 8 UW-La Crosse for the then No. 24 Titans. He was an instrumental part of a Titan defense that held the most efficient offense in the league to ten second-half points and conference-leading Joey Stutzman to 108 yards.

DE Alex Aitchison, Jr., Coe

Aitchison continued his dominant junior campaign in Coe's 37-31 win vs. Central. Going against one of the league's best tackles, Alex turned in a four-tackle effort, adding three tackles for loss and one and a half sacks. Aitchison had a pair of solo stops in the contest and had a total 11 negative yards on his tackles for loss. His half sack came in the first quarter on a third-and-7, forcing a Dutch punt while his solo sack came on the initial drive of the fourth, again forcing a punt with a crucial third-down sack.

LB Dorian Green, Jr., Hampden-Sydney

Green had a game-high and career-high 14 tackles, including three and a half sacks, one pass breakup and one quarterback hurry to lead H-SC during a 28-21 home win past Guilford on Oct. 29. He was big in the second half against the Quakers with 10 tackles and three sacks over the final two quarters.

LB Ernesto Mitchell, Sr., Morrisville State

Mitchell led the defensive efforts for Morrisville State over the weekend, posting a season high 16 tackles, including 11 solo, and one and a half tackles for loss in a 20-17 loss to Utica.

LB Joe Copp, Jr., Alfred

Joe Copp led the Alfred defense with a game-high 22 tackles against Cortland team. Copp finished with 11 solo tackles and 11 assisted tackles. The effort for Copp marks the fourth-highest tackles in program history for Alfred in a single game. Copp became the first player to record 20 or more tackles since the 2016 season for the Saxons.

CB Keyshawn Wilder, Jr., Shenandoah

Wilder tied the program record with four interceptions as Shenandoah shut out Averett 45-0. He finished with four tackles, all solo, had a tackle for loss, and blocked a kick.

S Ezekiel Sundberg, So., Gustavus Adolphus

Sundberg put the finishing touch on Gustavus' 28-9 win over Carleton with a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown with 13 seconds left in the game, marking his MIAC-leading fifth interception of the season. Sundberg also added three tackles and was part of a Gustie defense that held the Knights to a season-low 228 yards of total offense.

S Jake Binkowski, So., Carroll

Binkowski recorded the program's second-longest interception return for a touchdown with a 99-yard pick-six in a win against Carthage. He also had two tackles, both of them solo.

CB Adrian Williams, Jr., Carnegie Mellon

Williams had three interceptions and recorded 52 yards in returns in the Tartans' 30-12 win against St. Vincent. The junior also had two additional pass breakups and four total tackles, three solo. Williams' three interceptions tied the school record for most picks in a single game.

Special teams

K Luke Cool, So., UW-Stout

Cool set a school record (and tied a conference record) with five made field goals in the 3OT win against No. 22 Platteville. He made kicks of 28, 33, 18, 28 and 47 yards. His 47-yard field goal was a personal best that came in the second OT. He also made his PAT and kicked off five times for 263 yards (52.6 average).

P Max Boekenoogen, Sr., Pacific Lutheran

Boekenoogen blasted two punts for 94 yards, averaging 47 yards per punt. His first punt landed on the Willamette 2-yard line and set up a safety while his second punt was downed at the 4-yard line.

RET Damon Bonds, Sr., Lake Forest

After an injury to the Foresters starting returner, Bonds left the offensive backfield, where he had rushed for 136 yards, and provided the necessary spark for the Foresters 31-14 win against Monmouth. After a safety increased the Forester lead to 17-14, Bonds took the ensuing kickoff 74 yards for a touchdown to give the Foresters a 24-14 lead with 41 seconds to go in the third quarter.

ST Hector Johnson, So., Endicott

Johnson scored his first career touchdown with an electric 78-yard field goal block return to give Endicott a 14-0 lead in the second quarter against Curry. After Nick Stinson perfectly timed the field goal block, Johnson scooped up the loose ball out of a scrum and broke multiple tackles during different parts of the return to eventually find pay dirt in the 48-7 win.
