Tornados Win Triple-Overtime Thriller on Homecoming, 37-35

More news about: Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. – An eventful Homecoming weekend on the Brevard College campus was capped off with an instant classic Saturday night on the gridiron at Ives-Lemel Family Field, as the Brevard College football team (1-3, 1-0 USA South) won its first game of 2023 with a triple-overtime, 37-35 triumph over USA South Conference rival Maryville College (3-1, 0-1 USAS).

Sophomore quarterback Ethan Beamish connected with sophomore receiver Adam Douglas for a game-winning two-point conversion in the back of the end zone to give the Tornados a walk-off victory in the third overtime period, after Brevard's defense came up with a critical stop on Maryville's two-point attempt.

The victory gives the Tornados their fifth-consecutive win over the Scots, dating back to a triumph on Homecoming 2019 at Brevard Memorial Stadium.

Senior running back Chancellor Lee-Parker kickstarted BC's second-half offensive revival, rushing for a career-high 179 yards on the ground while scoring two touchdowns. Lee-Parker and fellow running back DJ Taylor were key parts of BC's 210-109 rushing advantage over the Scots.

Beamish completed 23 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns and connected with eight different receivers in the game. Reggie Taylor II caught his first career touchdown pass – a 75-yard strike from Beamish – part of a four-reception night that eclipsed the 100-yard mark. Zackary Orr caught six passes for 47 yards, while Adam Douglas and Cooper Hogan hauled down four catches each. Sophomore receiver Jack Spotz caught his first career touchdown pass as well.

Graduate linebacker Toby Naylor forced a Scot turnover on an interception while also logging six tackles and a quarterback sack. Quintrell BowmanDylan James, and James Woods all logged eight tackles apiece, with Bowman adding one and a half tackles-for-loss and a sack and Woods breaking up a career-best four passes. Senior defensive lineman Robert Dorsey stuffed the stat sheet with five tackles that included three tackles-for-loss and a game-high two and a half QB sacks. Kentrayle Holloway (seven tackles), Baylee Ramey (six tackles) and Trey Williams (five tackles, ½ TFL) all got in on plenty of plays defensively for the Tornados.

Hugo Taylor drilled two of his three field goal attempts, including a career-long 45-yard strike in overtime number two.

Maryville's Bryson Rollins accumulated 402 passing yards on a 32-for-53 mark but threw an interception to BC's Naylor. Braden Dunson rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown score, and Corey Russell caught an astonishing 14 passes for 182 yards. Devon White led the team with seven tackles and two for loss, while Ryan Moog sacked Beamish twice.

The Scots narrowly edged Brevard in total offense (511-474), but Brevard was more efficient on third downs (9-of-20) than the visitors were (4-of-16).

Each side traded punts on their first respective possessions of the evening, but the Scots were able to force Brevard to line up for its second punt of the game on the Tornados' next drive. Maryville got the ball down to the BC 21-yard-line but Rollins threw an interception to Naylor, giving BC the ball right back.

A three-and-out followed suit, and Maryville's special teams unit came up big with a partially blocked punt that was returned by MC's Jacob Berven for a short punt return TD score, putting the Scots up 6-0. The Tornados were able to block the extra-point attempt, keeping the deficit at a 6-0 margin.

Each side traded punts to close the first quarter out, and the Tornados were forced to punt yet again on their first drive of the second period. Brevard's defense came up with a fourth-down stop on Maryville's next possession, as the BC offense took back over with 10:40 left in the second quarter.

Taylor set up the Tornados in prime real estate following a 51-yard run that placed the ball inside the Scot 10-yard line. On third and goal from the nine, Beamish found Spotz for the touchdown score and Taylor's extra point gave Brevard a 7-6 lead.

Brevard's defense halted the Scots yet again on fourth down on Maryville's next possession, but the Tornados had to punt on their next drive giving MC the ball back with 3:40 left in the first half.

Maryville found the end zone, but a pass interference call brought the Scots back 15 yards on the play, forcing the visitors to settle for a field goal. MC took a narrow 9-7 edge into the halftime intermission.

The third quarter began like much of the first half, with both sides being forced to trade punts. Maryville was able to strike first, extending its lead to a nine-point margin, 16-7, following Dunson's 23-yard touchdown run. Lee-Parker and the Tornado offense found their answer on the ensuing possession, as the Auburn, Georgia senior broke off a 37-yard touchdown scamper to cut the deficit back down to two points, 16-14.

Maryville found the end zone for their second-straight scoring drive as Rollins scrambled on third and goal for a 12-yard touchdown, but the Scots attempted to run a fake on the extra point and the try was sniffed out by BC's special teams unit keeping the contest within one possession, 22-14, with 2:05 remaining in the third quarter.

It took the  BC offense just 11 seconds to tie things up, as Beamish hit Taylor II in stride for an electric 75-yard touchdown score that was followed by Douglas' two-point conversion reception, as the contest was level again at 22-all.

Brevard's defense closed out the third quarter by forcing a Maryville punt, and BC's offense cashed in as Lee-Parker busted off a 46-yard touchdown score – his second of the evening – to give Brevard its first lead of the ballgame 29-22.

Maryville found its counterpunch as the Scots went 50 yards in seven plays to tie things back up at 29 apiece.

Brevard was forced to punt on its next two drives, but the defense came through as Maryville went for it on fourth and long from the Brevard 33-yard-line and came up short, and the Tornados regained the ball with 31 seconds left, and all three timeouts left.

Beamish and the Tornado offense got Hugo Taylor within striking distance, but a 48-yard attempt came up just short as the contest shifted to the first overtime tied at 29.

Each side made field goals within 25 yards in the first OT period, as a second overtime ensued with the score 32-32 in the marathon USA South showdown.

BC's offense was stifled by the Scots on their offensive possession in the second OT, but Hugo Taylor drilled a career-long 45-yarded to give Brevard the lead back, 35-32. The Tornado defense held strong with a red-zone stand, as Maryville was forced to settle for a 26-yard field goal that leveled the contest back up, 35-35.

New overtime rules came into effect in the third overtime period, as the game would be decided by a shootout of two-point conversion attempts. Maryville went first and failed as a pass attempt was unsuccessful, setting the stage for Brevard's memorable walk-off win. Beamish threw a strike to the back of the end zone that was brought down by Douglas, as the Tornados left the Scots stunned with a 37-35 triumph in the conference opener.

Brevard will hit the road next weekend to take on Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina, with kickoff slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 30.
