Maryville Drops First of Season at Brevard, 37-35 in Three Overtimes

BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard's Ethan Beamish found Adam Douglas in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversion to send Maryville to its first loss of the season Saturday night, 37-35 in three overtimes.

It was the USA South opener for both teams.

After the teams traded field goals in the first two overtime periods, the rules put the ball at the 3-yard line for alternating conversions. Maryville went first and Bryson Rollins' pass attempt to Corey Russell was just out of his reach in the right corner of the end zone.

Brevard then converted its try, and the Tornadoes stretched their winning streak over Maryville to five games.

Rollins finished 32-of-53 passing for 402 yards and one interception. It's just the second time in Maryville program history that a Scots quarterback threw for more than 400 yards, trailing only Nick Myers with 459 yards against Berry in 2016.

Rollins didn't throw a touchdown pass for just the third time in 14 career games – neither time against Brevard has he found the end zone through the air and the other was against Centre in 2022. But he ran for a pair of TDs, finishing with 15 attempts for 17 yards.

Corey Russell was the game's leading receiver on a career night. The senior finished with 14 catches for 182 yards – the catches landing as the third-most in Maryville program history and the yards tying for the sixth-most. Russell's previous receiving highs were eight catches last week at Shenandoah, and 86 yards last year at Belhaven.

Devon White was the Maryville tackle leader with seven stops, including a pair of TFLs. Justin King added six tackles and a pass breakup, while Ryan Moog contributed a pair of sacks and Tyler Barrett had one sack. Jacob Berven got Maryville on the scoreboard first by returning a partially blocked punt 24 yards for a touchdown. It was his second career TD.

Maryville finished with a slight edge in total yards, 511 to 474. The Scots threw for 402 yards and rushed for another 109 – Braden Dunson was the leader there with nine carries for 70 yards and a  touchdown. Brevard threw for 264 and ran for 210, led by Chancellor Lee-Parker with 23 carries for 179 yards and two TDs.

The Scots dropped to 3-1 overall, while Brevard is now 1-3. Maryville is idle until hosting Greensboro on Oct. 7 in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
