Bears Blank Worcester State, 45-0

More news about: Bridgewater State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior running back Adam Couch (Winchendon, Mass.) rushed for 163 yards and three touchdowns while senior quarterback James Cahoon (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) threw for 302 yards and three scores to lead the Bridgewater State University football team to a 45-0 shutout victory over Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe Worcester State University on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Bears improve to 3-3 on the season and 3-1 in the MASCAC with their third straight win and second consecutive shutout, while the Lancers fall to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Bridgewater has won 16 of the last 17 meetings of the two teams as the Bears now hold a 25-11 advantage in the all-time series including a 12-7 mark at home.

Couch averaged 6.5 yards on his 25 rushing attempts and found the end zone on runs of three, six and six yards. He also caught two passes for 20 yards as 13 of his 27 touches resulted in either a first down or touchdown.

Cahoon completed 24 of 31 (77%) pass attempts and connected on scoring strikes of six, 13 and 24 yards.

The Bears amassed over 500 yards (509) of total offense for the second straight week.

Bridgewater scored twice in the first quarter as Couch capped off a six-play, 69-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run, while Cahoon put the finishing touches on a 13-play, 88-yard drive with a six-yard TD pass to sophomore wide receiver Jack McCarthy (Braintree, Mass.).

Junior kicker Shane Drake (Franklin, Mass.) booted a 29-yard field goal for the only points of the second quarter as the Bears took a 17-0 lead into the break.

The BSU defense forced two turnovers in the first half as the Bears turned the two Worcester miscues into ten points. Junior safety Dilaver Ibrahimi (Woburn, Mass.) forced and recovered a fumble at the BSU 12 with the Lancers driving on their opening possession of the first quarter. Moments later, McCarthy gave the hosts a 14-0 lead with his touchdown reception. Then midway through the second quarter, an interception by senior safety Nathan Oliver (South Dartmouth, Mass.) set up the Drake field goal.

The defense came up big again on the opening possession of the second half as the Bears made a big stop on fourth and two from the BSU 13. The offense then went to work scoring touchdowns on each of their next four possessions to put the game well out of reach.

The Bears marched 86 yards on seven plays following the big fourth down stop with Cahoon connecting with senior receiver Michael Nocera (Cumberland, R.I.) on a 13-yard touchdown pass. After a Lancer fumble at their own 19, Couch barreled in from six yards out to make it a 31-0 game.

The BSU defense then forced back-to-back punts and the Bears capitalized on both. Couch capped of a quick five-play, 74-yard drive with a six-yard scoring plunge, his third touchdown of the afternoon. A big 23-yard loss on an Anton Vazquez (Jr., Nahant, Mass.) sack forced the Lancers to punt from their own ten. A 15-yard face mask penalty on the ensuing punt return gave the Bears outstanding field position at the Worcester 36. Six plays later, Cahoon hooked up with freshman wide receiver Drew Donovan (Abington. Mass.) on a 24-yard touchdown pass to close out the scoring.

McCarthy finished with five receptions for 60 yards and a score, while Nocera caught four passes for 47 yards and a touchdown, and Donovan hauled in four receptions for 46 yards and his first collegiate touchdown.

Senior linebacker Brendan Albert (Canton, Mass.) paced the BSU defensive effort with a game-high 14 tackles with ten solo stops, 1 ½ tackles for loss and a pair of forced fumbles. Senior linebacker Steven Silvia (Dighton, Mass.) checked in with seven tackles (three solo) with 1 ½ tackles for loss, while junior linebacker Kodi Saotome (Warren, R.I.) notched seven tackles (five solo) and Ibrahimi added three solo stops to go along with his forced and recovered fumble.

The Bears' defense forced three turnovers on the afternoon and held the Lancers to just 70 rushing yards.

BSU freshman kicker Joey Naso (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) was a perfect 6-for-6 in point after tries.

Four Worcester quarterbacks combined to complete 13 of 28 pass attempts for 171 yards with an interception. Junior wide receiver Deion Osei-Sarpong (Holden, Mass.) grabbed four receptions for 38 yards.

Senior safety Noah Peterson (Millbury, Mass.) notched 11 tackles (eight solo) and a pair of pass breakups to lead the Worcester defense, while sophomore linebacker Jonah Familia (Worcester, Mass.) recorded nine tackles (eight solo) with a sack, two tackles for loss and a pass breakup.

Following a bye week, the Bears travel to Westfield State University on Saturday, October 22nd to take on the Owls at 2:00 PM. The Lancers host Massachusetts Maritime Academy next Saturday afternoon at 2:30.

Notes: With his three touchdowns, Couch moved into 23rd place on the Bears' all-time scoring list (126 pts.)….Senior wider receiver Kyle Torres (Waltham, Mass.) moved into 14th place among the Bears' all-time receptions leaders (65)…The Bears tied the team record for consecutive shutouts with two (1986, 2011).
