More news about: Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Presley Egbers passed for two touchdowns and ran for two touchdowns to lead Randolph-Macon College to 28-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football road win at Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday afternoon on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. It was the 125th edition of "The Game" as the visiting Yellow Jackets (4-0, 4-0 ODAC) led 21-0 at halftime before adding a late touchdown in the fourth quarter against the host Tigers (3-1, 3-1 ODAC).

R-MC got on the scoreboard near the end of the first quarter when Egbers found Ricky Mayfield for a six-yard touchdown pass with just 21-seconds remaining in quarter. Chris Vidal added the first of his four PATs to give the visitors the 7-0 advantage after the nine-play, 58-yard drive.

The Yellow Jackets added two scores in the second quarter, getting a one-yard touchdown run at 9:43, and a three-yard touchdown run at 2:38—both by Egbers—with the two PATs by Vidal for the 21-0 halftime margin. The first scoring drive covered 98 yards on eight plays, while the second scoring drive covered 29 yards on five plays. The nearly length-of-the-field drive resulted from a collegiate-best 63-yard punt by freshman George Langhammer/Roanoke, while the short scoring possession was set-up by an interception made by the visitors.

H-SC took the ball deep into R-MC territory on its second possession of the third quarter, driving 52 yards on 11 plays, before a second interception stopped it at the Yellow Jacket four-yard line. The key play offensively on the drive was a 30-yard pass from junior transfer quarterback Tanner Bernard/Lynchburg to freshman wide receiver Braeden Bowling/Cary, NC. The margin remained at 21-0 through three quarters, following the scoreless third.

R-MC added its final touchdown with 6:55 left to play when Egbers connected with David Wallis on a 19-yard scoring play. Vidal added the PAT after the quick four-play, 40-yard drive to provide for the final margin in the rivalry game that has been played 125 times between the two schools.

Bernard, a transfer from NCAA Division II UVA Wise, passed for 62 yards (7-18) with two interceptions. Junior running back Kaleb Smith/Rocky Mount rushed for 31 yards on seven carries. Senior captain and wide receiver Dillon Costello/South Riding had two catches for 20 yards, while Bowling added one reception for 30 yards. Langhammer punted seven times for an average of 39.0 yards, including the 63-yarder that was downed inside the 20 at the two-yard line.

Freshman defensive back Will Pickren/Mt Pleasant, SC finished with a game-high and career-high 14 tackles, including one for loss. Senior defensive end Tyler Lohman/Centreville had nine tackles, including one sack, while senior linebacker Brendan Weinberg/Apex, NC and junior linebacker Peyton Carneal/Hayes each added eight tackles—Weinberg with 0.5 tackles for loss and Carneal with one tackle for loss. Junior cornerback Jordan Fields/Chapel Hill had seven tackles, while freshman cornerback Tobias Lafayette/Charleston, SC and junior defensive tackle Michael Harris/St. Stephens Church each contributed six tackles—Lafayette getting a pass breakup and Harris with one tackle for loss.

Egbers passed for a game-high 212 yards (16-20) with two touchdowns and no interceptions, adding 10 rushes for 11 yards and two touchdowns on the ground for R-MC. Nick Hale rushed for a game-high 90 yards on 22 carries. Wallis finished with game-highs of seven receptions for 105 yards and one touchdown, while Mayfield had one catch for six yards and one touchdown for the Yellow Jackets. Tyler DeBerry had 10 tackles, including two tackles for loss, and one interception, while Matthew Vergara and Jacob Hutchinson each added five tackles—Vergara with one sack among 3.5 tackles for loss, and Hutchinson with two sacks among 2.5 tackles for loss. Cade Jones had one interception.

H-SC continues to lead the Oldest Small School Rivalry in the South, 60-54-11; however, the Yellow Jackets have now won seven-straight and nine of the last 10 games played between the two storied programs.

H-SC will play at home again next Saturday, April 3, at 1 p.m. against visiting Ferrum in the ODAC third-place game on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
