ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Muhlenberg College poured in 24 points in the second quarter to run away from Gettysburg College in a 43-7 decision in Centennial Conference football action Saturday at Scotty Wood Stadium.
Gettysburg (2-4, 2-3 CC) was held to a season-low point total and its lowest rushing output since last season's meeting with Muhlenberg (5-1, 4-1 CC). The Mules forced five turnovers on the way to capturing the Old Tin Cup for the fifth consecutive year.
The Bullets survived a fumble on the opening kickoff as Muhlenberg missed a 35-yard field goal attempt. After a three-and-out by the visitors, the Mules put the first points on the board with a four-yard rushing touchdown by Nick Savant. That would hold as the only points of the quarter.
Early in the second period, Gettysburg was sitting on the Muhlenberg doorstep after a 35-yard rush by junior quarterback Justin Davidov (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) down to the one yard-line. The team couldn't convert as two plays later Davidov's pass into the end zone was picked off by John Feaster.
The Mules came right back with Nick Palladino completing a 42-yard pass to Savant for a touchdown on the next drive. Another interception set up another Palladino touchdown toss to make it 23-0 in favor of Muhlenberg.
The hosts went into the locker room with a 30-0 lead and after coming up empty on the first drive, the Mules scored on their next three possessions. A 26-yard field goal by Todd Spirit put the score at 43-0 with 1:24 left in the third quarter.
Gettysburg blocked a punt to set up a touchdown at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Senior Danny Thompson (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) completed a pair of passes to junior Ty Abdul-Karim (Washington, D.C./Woodberry Forest (Va.)) during the drive, the last going for 36 yards and resulting in Abdul-Karim's fourth touchdown of the season.
Muhlenberg finished with a 491-234 lead in total offense, including 172-86 on the ground. The Mules also accrued nearly 41 minutes of possession time.
Thompson finished 10-of-20 for 115 yards. Davidov led the ground game with 56 yards on seven carries. Freshmen Kevin Benavente (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) caught four passes for 23 yards and Abdul-Karim finished with 48 yards receiving.
Juniors Kamau Bridges (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and Glenn Benson (North Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield) each finished with 10 tackles. Junior Dakota Brovero (Monroeville, N.J./Delsea)) finished with nine tackles and two sacks.
Savant finished with 114 rushing yards and a touchdown, while catching seven passes for 145 yards and two scores. Palladino finished 21-of-32 for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Luke Wiley posted a pair of interceptions and five tackles.
Next up for Gettysburg is a Friday night showdown at No. 9 Johns Hopkins University (6-0, 5-0 CC) on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.
