PAXTON, Mass.—The Maritime College (N.Y.) football team shutout the AMCATS of Anna Maria College 22-0 in Saturday's Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) play at AMCAT Field.
TODAY'S STORYLINE
The Privateers brought the AMCAT offense to a standstill, forcing them into seven three-and-out drives and tallying three sacks and 18 tackles-for-loss to hold Anna Maria to just 20 yards of total offense on the day.
Meanwhile, the Privateers' offense connected for three field goals and two touchdowns to take the victory. They compiled 513 yards of offense and saw quarterback Thomas Wright (Wantagh, N.Y.) complete 18 of 37 passes for 294 yards and a touchdown.
SCORING
Maritime scored on their first drive of the day as junior placekicker Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y.) connected on a 46-yard field goal.
On the ensuing drive, the AMCATS used six plays to travel 20 yards but were forced to punt. The punt was blocked and recovered by the AMCATS, but the Privateers were awarded prime field positioning at the AMCAT 31-yard line. Anna Maria's defense made a huge stand, holding Maritime to three plays and a field goal attempt, which went wide.
After turning the ball over on downs on their second drive and missing the field goal on their third, the Privateers scored their first touchdown at the 4:18 mark of the second quarter after using eight plays to travel 47 yards, resulting in a one-yard quarterback-keep touchdown for Wright. The extra-point attempt by Murphy was unsuccessful.
A 39-yard field goal with 1:20 left in the half gave the Privateers the 12-0 lead at halftime.
The Privateers opened scoring in the second half with a 35-yard field goal by Murphy at the 7:55 mark and scored a touchdown on their next drive as Wright threw a 29-yard pass to Joe Modica (East Islip, N.Y.) with just over a minute left to play in the third quarter.
AMCAT NUMBERS
The AMCAT defense saw significant time on the field today and totaled over 100 tackles as a team. Brian Morretti (West Warwick, R.I.) compiled a team-high 13 tackles, followed by Jarius Ransom (Williamstown, N.J.) with 12 and Stefano Marziale (Cranston, R.I.) with 11, including a sack and a tackle-for-loss.
The AMCATS totaled five tackles-for-loss on the day, as Tyler Jacobs (New Bedford, Mass.), Emmanuel Hans (Lowell, Mass.), John Bartose (Salem, N.H.) and Michael Hall (East Providence, R.I.) all recorded one apiece.
Offensively, quarterback Darius Jones-Clark (Baltimore, Md.) completed six passes for 39 yards including a game-best 26-yard pass to Joseph D'Onofrio (Everett, Mass.). D'Onofrio also rushed the ball 15 times for 29 yards.
Punter Francis Cole (Maspeth, N.Y.) punted 10 times for 513 yards, averaging 51.3 yards per punt wit ha long of 62 and four landing inside the 20.
MARITME LEADERS
Severino Torelli (Bayville, N.Y.) rushed 25 times for 115 yards and a long of 26 to lead the Privateers on the ground. Receiver Matt Ward (Ronhonkoma, N.Y.) caught seven passes for 95 yards and was one of three members of the team to finish with more than 50 receiving yards.
Defensively, Wesley Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished with a game-high four tackles-for-loss and also added a 13-yard sack.
WHAT'S NEXT
The AMCATS (0-5, 0-2 ECFC) host Norwich next Saturday, October 15th, at 1:00 p.m. as part of Homecoming Weekend. The Privateers (3-2, 1-1 ECFC) will host Becker on the same day at 2:00 p.m.
