Alpine, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team took some time to get started, but the Cru rolled from there on the way to a 56-9 victory over Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon in Alpine. UMHB improves to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Lobos to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the ASC on the year.
Sul Ross State opened the scoring with a 25-yard James Davis run on the Lobos opening possession. UMHB fumbled away a scoring chance on its next drive before finally answering with Michael Carpenter's nine-yard TD run with 3:44 left in the first quarter. Sul Ross State blocked the extra point and returned it for two points for a 9-6 Lobo lead. Zach Anderson broke off a 45-yard scoring run on the next UMHB drive to give the Cru its first lead of the game at 13-9. Anderson then added touchdown passes of 34 yards to Marcus Wimby and 49 yards to Kamray Runnels to give UMHB a 27-9 halftime lead. Duane Thompson ran for three consecutive in the third quarter. The Cru added a safety and T.J. Josey scored on a 24-yard run in the fourth quarter to provide the final margin.
UMHB rolled up 530 yards of total offense with 324 of those coming on the ground. Sul Ross managed just 163 total yards on 64 offensive plays and turned the ball over twice.
Anderson was 10-16 passing for 167 yards and two touchdowns and he added 56 rushing yards and a score. Thompson posted his first career 100-yard rushing day with 114 yards and three touchdowns on 21 totes. Wimby caught six passes for 56 yards and Runnels had three grabs for 87. Jaedon Johnson had six tackles and Trey Thedford, Justin Richter and Teidrick Smith had two sacks each for the Cru defense.
The Cru has now won 49 consecutive regular season games and 33 straight ASC contests. UMHB will return to action with a 1:00 PM home game against Louisiana College next Saturday at Crusader Stadium.
