MLC Dominates at the Dome

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The MLC football team jumped on top of Eureka early and ran away in the second half to a dominating 52-13 win at the Metrodome Saturday night.

MLC got off to a hot start in the first half, scoring on its second drive on an 87-yard touchdown pass from Greg Holzhueter to Galen Holzhueter to take a 7-0 lead.

After the defense forced a punt, Greg Holzhueter capped a 14-play, 66-yard scoring drive with a three-yard touchdown run to put the Knights up 14-0.

Eureka kicked a pair of field goals in the second quarter, but the Knights finished the half strong with a seven-play, 44-yard drive that ended with a Shawn Scherer field goal to put MLC ahead 17-6 at the half.

MLC outgained Eureka 259-89 in the first half, with Greg Holzhueter going 5-11 for 152 yards and a score. Galen Holzhueter had two catches for 100 yards and a score in the first half.

The Knights continued to roll in the third quarter, as Aaron Voss scored from two yards out on MLC's first drive of the second half, while Greg Holzhueter scored on a 23-yard touchdown run on MLC's next possession to push MLC's lead to 31-6.

The MLC defense held firm on Eureka's next possession when Chuqee Fletcher recovered a fumble inside the MLC ten-yard line. MLC turned field position quickly, as a 71-yard run from Jake Unke put the Knights deep into Red Devil territory, setting up another MLC scoring drive, this one finished by another Voss two-yard rushing touchdown.

After another forced turnover on the next Eureka possession, the MLC second offense got into the act, as Ryan Schmeling threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Micah Plocher to move MLC's lead to 45-6.

MLC tacked on one more score late in the fourth, as Tyler Dorn scored from one seven yards out after another long pass from Schmeling to Plocher set up the score.

MLC outgained Eureka in the game 620-260, with 337 yards through the air and 283 on the ground. Greg Holzhueter finished the game 10-17 passing for 237 yards and one score. Galen Holzhueter had four catches for 131 yards and a touchdown receiving, while Plocher caught two passes for 100 yards.

On defense, Matt Rothe and Andrew Stuebs had nine tackles, with Rothe adding a forced fumble and a sack, while Stuebs had an interception. Fletcher had a sack and a fumble recovery for the defense, which forced three turnovers on the day.

With the win, MLC improved to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the UMAC, while Eureka fell to 1-7 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.

MLC will return to action next Saturday, November 6, when it hosts Macalester. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
