Roundup: Unlikely unbeatens continue on

More news about: Coe | Randolph-Macon | UW-La Crosse

Coe has had plenty of reason to celebrate so far this season.

Coe blocked a field goal to remain undefeated, while Randolph-Macon won in a wet one and UW-La Crosse rolled as all three teams improved to an unlikely 5-0.

Gavin Glenn scored on a 1-yard keeper with 1:26 left and Coe blocked a 22-yard field goal attempt as time expired and the Kohawks held off Central 33-30. Trevor Heitland ran for 210 yards and two scores and added 57 yards receiving for the Kohawks, while Glenn was 22-for-30 passing for 232 yards and ran for the winning score.

Randolph-Macon ran its way to 376 yards of total offense and held Bridgewater under 100 total yards as the Yellow Jackets improved to 5-0 with a 21-0 win. The Eagles converted just one third down in 16 attempts on the afternoon. Tre Frederick ran for 76 yards and two scores in the win while Michael Farry led the defense with 12 tackles and a sack.

Tyler Jenkins ran for 63 yards and three touchdowns and UW-La Crosse improved to 5-0 with a 42-6 win at UW-Stout. Three Blue Devils quarterback combined to go 13-for-36 passing in the loss. Five is already the most wins the Eagles have had in a season since 2007. UWL has Whitewater next week, followed by Eau Claire, Stevens Point, Oshkosh and Platteville to close the season.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps ran for 426 yards and improved to 4-0 with a 45-28 win vs. Occidental late Saturday night. Garrett Cheadle ran for 214 yards and five touchdowns, while Christian Curcio added 172 yards and a score on 21 carries in the win.

Amherst is no longer among the ranks of the unbeaten, as the former Lord Jeffs have a former winning streak as well. Amherst, which entered the day with the longest active winning streak in Division III at 21 games, lost 27-26 at Middlebury. Carter Massengill kicked two field goals in the second half to give Middlebury a 27-26 lead. The Panthers forced two Amherst three-and-outs, then Martin Williams intercepted Nick Morales with 2:22 left and Middlebury ran out the clock.

Merchant Marine matched last season's win total as Justin Sydlowski's interception with 2:13 to play set up the game-winning field goal by Jake McDonough with 13 seconds left in a 45-44 victory over WPI. Robert Moore ran for 156 yards and threw for 150 in the win as the Mariners rallied from a 45-34 deficit in the final four and a half minutes.

Frank Williams caught nine passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns as Bates picked up its first win of the season, defeating Williams 29-17.

Jake O'Connell returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter and Brockport made it stand up through a wild final two minutes in a 35-28 win vs. Utica. The return gave the Golden Eagles a 28-14 lead before three touchdowns, two by Utica, were scored in the final two minutes.

Pete Coughlin had another seven-touchdown game, although it took a bit longer this time around, as Washington & Jefferson defeated Carnegie Mellon 55-52 in double overtime. Sam Benger ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns but had 57 yards on one carry and 103 yards on his other 39. Coughlin hit Jesse Zubik for the last of his four touchdowns in the second overtime for the winner.

Elmhurst rolled up a school-record 607 yards of total offense and left Carroll still searching for its first win as a member of the CCIW as the Bluejays won 45-34. Elmhurst never punted once in improving to 4-2, 3-1 in the CCIW while Carroll fell to 0-5, 0-3.

Nick Maciejewski kicked the game-winning 19-yard field goal as time expired to lift FDU-Florham past Lycoming, 24-21. It's the Devils' second consecutive week winning the game in the final seconds.

Crown scored twice after trailing by 13 points in the closing minutes, but failed on both extra point conversions and Greenville held on to win 34-33. Chad Anenson converted his first three extra-point kicks but missed the fourth, leaving the Storm trailing 34-27. Crown got the ball back after a three-and-out and scored with 32 seconds left, but went for two and could not convert, leaving the final margin.
