Team of the Week, Week 2 1999

Games of Sept. 10-11, 1999

Offense

QB Michael Kornblau, Greenville
Back from a back injury which kept him out of the team's opener, Kornblau was 26-for-36 for 484 yards and four touchdowns. Both yards and touchdowns are school records.

OL Van Everette, Matthew Romani, Daniel Latham, Adam Ward, Jim Fraser, Hampden-Sydney
Just a week after allowing six sacks, the Hampden-Sydney line allowed none in leading the Tigers to 542 total yards of offense, the second-highest total for a H-SC team in the 1990s. In addition, the O-line helped H-SC running back Ernest Cheatham gain 158 yards on the ground, just the third time in the 1990s that a H-SC back has gone over 150 yards.

RB Justin Wright, Rowan
The senior needed only one half of action to rush for 138 yards, three touchdowns, and a 9.9 yards per carry average.

RB Jamal Robertson, Ohio Northern
The Polar Bears junior carried 20 times for 180 yards for three touchdowns, including one for 71 yards.

WR Scott Pingel, Westminster
Welcome back -- the first two-time Team of the Week member broke Scott Hvistendahl's record this time, for most career yardage. And he did it in grand fashion, catching 13 balls for 188 yards and a touchdown.

WR Darren Reed, Manchester
The sophomore had a school-record 15 catches for 229 yards and two touchdowns in a 39-37 win against Waynesburg.

TE Steve Vagedes, Ohio Northern
Vagedes caught three balls for 60 yards and a touchdown and also uncorked a 60-yard punt.

Defense

DL Jon Jones, MacMurray
Four solo tackles, four assists, four sacks for the senior, who tallied minus-35 yards on the afternoon. He also had half a tackle for loss and caused a fumble.

DL Art Sandora, Delaware Valley
The senior had five tackles for loss, two sacks in a 26-20 win against Moravian. He registered nine total tackles.

LB Joe Gillespie, Franklin & Marshall
The senior was all over the field, mostly behind Catholic's line of scrimmage as he notched 15 total tackles (nine solo), four tackles for minus-28 yards and three sacks for minus-12.

LB Andy O'Hara, Lake Forest
Helped hold Chicago to zero offensive points and 71 yards rushing with 13 tackles (five solo), a pass broken up, and four tackles for loss (three sacks).

LB Jerimiah Janssen, St. Norbert
The junior, who qualified for the Division III outdoor track and field championships in the high jump last spring, had 11 solo tackles (14 total) and four for loss against UW-Oshkosh.

LB Mike Ortiz, FDU-Madison
Not only did the senior have 14 total tackles, two and a half tackles for loss and a sack, but he intercepted a PAT attempt and ran it back 100 yards for two defensive points.

DB Brian Childs, UW-Platteville
Childs led the team in tackles (15) and passes broken up (4), then made his collegiate debut at wide receiver. On his first play, the senior caught what proved to be the game-winning 29-yard touchdown pass in UW-Platteville's 20-17 victory against Lakeland.

DB Nate Loughran, Augsburg
Starting at cornerback in his first college football game, the freshman intercepted three passes in Augsburg's 29-27, three-overtime victory at Mayville State on Saturday. In addition to his three pickoffs, Loughran also had three tackles (1 solo), 1.5 for loss. Loughran's first pickoff stopped a 9-play, 45-yard drive by the Comets, his second stopped a drive at the Augsburg 14-yard line and his final interception ended Mayville State's drive in the second overtime.

DB John Peays, Wheaton
The senior had 12 total tackles, an interception, and blocked a Washington U. field goal in a 35-12 win.

DB Gary Bolden, MacMurray
For the second consecutive week, Bolden scored two touchdowns, this week on a 57-yard interception return and a 51-yard punt return to break open a 13-0 game in the third quarter. He also caused a fumble and broke up two passes.

Special teams

RET Chad Valentyne, UW-Stevens Point
The freshman returned three kickoffs for 169 yards, including a 93-yard third-quarter return that proved to be the game-winning touchdown in a 28-26 victory at Division II Northern State. Also had an 80-yard kickoff return in the second quarter and caught an 10-yard touchdown pass in his collegiate debut.

ST Jason Benson, Simpson
The senior was a kick-blocking fiend, deflecting a Coe field goal and a PAT, securing Simpson's 10-9 win.
