Maritime’s Fast Start Sinks WPI in Home Setback

More news about: WPI

WORCESTER -- Visiting NY Maritime struck early and methodically built a four-score cushion to defeat WPI 28-7 on Saturday at Alumni Stadium. The Engineers slipped to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in NEWMAC play, while the Privateers improved to 5-3 and 3-2 in the conference.

Maritime seized control with touchdowns on its first three drives and never trailed. Quarterback Will Pickett (Rockville Centre, NY) tossed scoring passes to Nate Casaburi (Sayville, NY) from six and one yard out, following an opening-series plunge by Mark Russo (Sea Cliff, NY) to build a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

After the break, the Privateers marched 16 plays and 70 yards, capped by a seven-yard TD run from Joshua Rogers (Valley Stream, NY) for a 28-0 lead with 4:43 left in the third.

WPI answered on the ensuing drive when Jack Schuck (Bangor, ME) connected with Jeff Quigley (Peabody, MA) for a seven-yard touchdown, finishing an eight-play, 65-yard drive with 1:36 remaining in the quarter. The Engineers threatened twice more in the second half, but Maritime turned them away on downs, including a stand at the four-yard line early in the fourth.

Schuck paced WPI by going 23-of-45 for 244 yards and a touchdown. Michael Krevosky (Kingston, MA) led the receiving corps with five catches for 74 yards, Ty Csencsits (Hellertown, MA) added five grabs for 64, and Dante Atwood (Newton, MA) hauled in three for 39. Garrett Ranieri (Templeton, MA) contributed four catches for 23 yards, and Quigley finished with four receptions for 20 and the lone score. On the ground, Quigley posted 22 net rushing yards to lead the Engineers.

Defensively, Patrick Andrews (Marlboro, MA) tallied seven tackles, Jake Robertson (Grafton, MA) notched six, and Grant Engelhardt (Chelmsford, MA), James Compito (Washingtonville, NY) and) each registered five. Engelhardt and Andrew Zipko (Rocky Mount, NC)   both had tackles for loss, while Engelhardt, Michael Doherty (Woburn, MA),  Jack Auchter (Ware, MA) recorded pass breakups.

Pickett finished 21-of-29 for 174 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, finding Casaburi eight times for 76 yards and both scores. Rogers added 45 rushing yards and 41 receiving, and Russo chipped in a one-yard TD run.

Defensively for NY Maritime, Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) logged six tackles, an interception, and a pass breakup. Vinny Fundaro (Levittown, NY), Gerard Fundaro (Floral Park, NY), and Patrick Noto (Smithtown, NY) each recorded sacks, while Georgios Tsoumpariotis (Albertson, NY) added a pass breakup.

Both teams will square off against conference-foe MIT in their next matchups. WPI travels to take on the Engineers on Saturday, Nov. 1, for a noon kickoff. NY Maritime has a bye before returning home for Senior Day on Nov. 8 at 12pm against the Engineers.
