Hampden-Sydney Opens Season With Road Win At (RV)Delaware Valley (PA) 38-9

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. -- Senior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) passed for 204 yards and three touchdowns, senior wide receiver and team captain Mason Cunningham (Arlington) had 92 yards receiving and two touchdowns, and junior running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) rushed for a game-high 128 yards and one touchdown, as Hampden-Sydney College took a 38-9 season-opening and non-conference football road win at (RV)Delaware Valley University on Saturday afternoon in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. The visiting Tigers (1-0) never trailed against the host Aggies (0-1), leading 14-0 after one quarter, 17-9 at halftime and 31-9 after three quarters en route to the convincing triumph.

"I'm really proud of this team and their effort," said second-year head coach Vince Luvara. "We talked all week how it was about our effort and our execution each play. I thought we displayed that for 60 minutes and in all three phases."

H-SC took its first possession of the game (and season) and promptly drove 56 yards on three plays with Sido finding Cunningham open down the right side of the field on a go route for a 40-yard touchdown pass. Junior punter/placekicker Camden Richardson (Midlothian) added the first of his four PAT kicks for the early 7-0 advantage at 9:14. Hicks had a 16-yard run just ahead of the scoring play for the Tigers.

The Garnet & Grey defense forced a three-and-out and took possession at their own 42-yard line. H-SC took its second possession and drove 58 yards on three plays with Sido and Cunningham once-again connecting on a touchdown pass, this time a 42-yard strike as Cunningham was open on a post route—the play beginning from nearly the same place as the first score. Richardson's PAT made it 14-0 at 6:48 of the opening quarter. Hicks added a 13-yard run to begin the drive.

The Tigers extended their lead to 17-0 early in the second quarter when Richardson kicked his first collegiate field goal from 24 yards out at 14:21. It culminated a quick possession after sophomore linebacker Frank Brewer (Charlotte, NC) had recovered a fumble at the visitor's 12-yard line.

DelVal, receiving votes in both the preseason AFCA D3 Coaches Poll and the preseason D3football.com Top 25, responded with a 25-yard field goal by Brendan Hazell at 8:54, and the hosts added a 74-yard touchdown pass from Michael Galasso to Cory Gordon at 5:45, but senior defensive lineman Wyatt Croson (Warrenton) blocked the PAT kick and it was a 17-9 margin at halftime.

Following an hour-plus weather delay following the intermission, the third quarter finally got under with H-SC taking its second possession of the quarter and driving 46 yards on nine plays with Hicks finding the end zone for his first touchdown of the season on a one-yard scoring run at 3:48 for a 24-9 advantage. Hicks had a 10-yard run early in the drive that was also aided by a pass interference penalty.

The Garnet & Grey defense forced another punt and the visitors took possession late in the quarter and quickly went 67 yards on six plays, culminating with Sido and sophomore wide receiver Manning Lasso (Raleigh, NC) connecting on a 35-yard touchdown pass. Richardson's PAT kick made it 31-9 with just 33-seconds left in the quarter, as the Tigers took a 22-point margin into the final stanza.

The two teams traded a pair of possessions each in the fourth quarter before H-SC put the final points on the scoreboard when freshman running back Will Foley (Virginia Beach) scored on a two-yard touchdown run with 1:55 remaining—the first TD of his collegiate career. It capped a six-play, 49-yard drive that featured Foley covering 37 yards on four carries, and freshman placekicker Davis Dudley (Charlotte, NC) added his first collegiate PAT kick to provide for the final 38-9 margin of victory.

Sido passed for his 204 yards (11-25-0) and three touchdowns with no interceptions for H-SC, adding 33 yards rushing on four attempts. Hicks rushed for his game-high 128 yards on a career-high 27 attempts, adding one reception for 30 yards. Senior running back Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) added 39 yards rushing on nine attempts, and Foley contributed 37 yards on four attempts and one touchdown. Cunningham had 92 yards receiving on three receptions and two touchdowns, though he did not play in the second half. Lasso had 55 yards receiving on two receptions and one touchdown, while sophomore wide receiver Phillip Dube (Glen Allen) had 13 yards receiving on two receptions. Richardson averaged 38.7 yards on three punts, including a long of 44 yards. Gonzalez averaged 29.0 yards on two kick returns, including a long return of 35 yards.

Senior safety and team captain Markevus Graves-Franklin (Lynchburg) and sophomore safety Mitch Ladamus (Fort Mill, SC) each had six tackles to lead the Tigers' defense, with Graves-Franklin having 0.5 tackles for loss and Ladamus adding a fumble recovery and a pass breakup. Senior linebacker and team captain Robert Clarke (Atlanta, GA), sophomore cornerback Parks Cromwell (Charlotte, NC) and sophomore linebacker Max Bidou (Mechanicsville) each added five tackles, with Cromwell having a sack, a forced fumble, an interception and three pass breakups, as well. Senior linebacker Max Pickren (Mount Pleasant, SC) and junior cornerback Cam Jackson (Alexandria) each contributed four tackles, with Jackson also adding a pass breakup.

Galasso passed for a game-high 209 yards (13-31-1) and one touchdown with one interception for DelVal. Brady Beres had 33 yards rushing on 11 attempts. Gordon had a game-high 113 yards receiving on two receptions and one touchdown. Jeremiah Clark had a game-high 15 tackles for the Aggies.

H-SC will welcome visiting (RV)Washington & Jefferson (PA) College in its home opener on Saturday, September 13, at 1 p.m. on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The Presidents, also receiving votes in both national polls, lost today at home to Utica (NY) 49-31.
