SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University football team is set to host an NCAA quarterfinal game against Mount Union on Dec. 14th at noon inside Sea Gull Stadium. This is the 14th run in the NCAA Tournament for SU and the first trip to the quarterfinals since 2019. The Sea Gulls earned a first-round bye followed by a 33-13 win over King's (Pa.) in the second-round and a 35-14 win last week in the third round over Randolph Macon.

The Series
This is only the second meeting in football between the two programs. The teams met in 2022 in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament with the Purple Raiders coming out on top.
The Captains
Graduate student Ben Spiess with seniors Ben Malley, Ronald Clark, and Tony Mason were announced as captains headed into the NCAA quarterfinal game against Mount Union.
Feeling Elite
The Sea Gulls are one of eight teams remaining in the 2024 NCAA tournament competing for a National Championship. SU is ranked No. 3 in the country according to the latest NPI rankings. St. Johns sits at No. 1 while Hardin-Simmons sits at No. 2 and both teams have already been knocked out. If the Sea Gulls can keep winning, they will host up until the National Title game. The Purple Raiders sit at No. 6 in the NPI rankings.
Another NJAC Title
Since joining the NJAC in 2015, Salisbury has won 65 games in the conference. The 65 wins stand as the most wins among active teams in the conference. Since joining the NJAC in 2015, Salisbury has won six conference championships which is the most in the nine-year span. The Sea Gulls added the 2024 Title to the trophy case this season.
Among the Greats
Salisbury head coach Sherman Wood ranks in the top-15 of active coaches in wins, regardless of NCAA Division. Coach Wood totaled 214 victories as head coach with stints at Bowie State and SU. After earning his second AFCA Division III Region 2 Coach of the Year, Wood and his staff added NJAC Staff of the Year to an already impressive resume this season. The 10-0 season marks the second time coach Wood has completed an undefeated year while also racking up his 11th Conference Championship going 6-0 in NJAC play.
All-Region Honors
Tre Price, the Westminster, Md. native who also earned AFCA All-America First Team, picked up First Team honors. Price started all 12 games so far for Salisbury on the front line helping the offense average 49 points and 488 yards per game. The offense has also been 59 percent on third downs and 55 percent on fourth down situations which has been a big part of the team's 12-0 record rolling into the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Price also earned All NJAC First Team.
Tony Mason, the New Castle, Del. native, earned Second Team honors. Mason, along with Price on the offensive line also started every game for the Sea Gulls helping the offense average 488 yards per game with 335 of those yards coming from the running game. He also earned All NJAC First Team.
Ronald Clark, the Baltimore Md. native, earned Third Team honors for being the biggest beneficiary of the Sea Gull offensive line. Clark has totaled 998 yards on the ground with 11 touchdowns averaging 83 yards per game. Clark also earned All NJAC First Team.
Leading the defense up front and earning Third Team honors was Frankie Giannetti. Giannetti, the Toms River, N.J. native, has tallied 37 total tackles with 14.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. Along with the other All-Region honorees, Gianetti also earned All NJAC First Team.
Scouting the Purple Raiders
Mount Union (12-0), competing in its NCAA-record 35th NCAA Playoff, has a 114-21 (.844) record all-time in NCAA Playoff games, advancing to the Stagg Bowl 22 times since 1993 with an NCAA record 13 National Championships. The Purple Raiders won the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) for a league-record 35th time for the conference's automatic bid for this year's NCAA Playoffs.
The University of Mount Union continued on its way to a possible 14th National Championship with a hard-earned 24-19 victory over Carnegie Mellon in a Division III third-round playoff game last week. The Purple Raiders also earned a first-round bye like the Sea Gulls and earned a 42-7 win over John Carroll in the second round.
Seniors bandit Rossy Moore (Lima, OH/Lima Central Catholic) and running back Tyler Echeverry (Naples, FL/Barron Collier) highlighted the 2024 D3football.com All-Region Teams as Moore was named the All-Region 4 Team Defensive Player of the Year for the unprecedented third-straight year and Echeverry was named the All-Region 4 Team Offensive Player of the Year.
