WAYNESBURG, Pa. (November 9) – The Waynesburg University football team honored its seniors and dispatched Thiel 37-10 in the Yellow Jackets' home finale on Saturday afternoon at John F. Wiley Stadium.
Waynesburg moves to 4-5 on the season and in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action while Thiel drops to 2-7, 2-7 PAC.
The Jacket defense had four takeaways and the Waynesburg offense scored five touchdowns, two through the air and three on the ground.
Tyler Richmond (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) had four receptions for 132 yards and two touchdowns, all in the first half. His first score was a 28-yard contested catch in the front corner of the end zone on third down. After the Waynesburg defense held Thiel to a field goal late in the first half, Richmond had a 63-yard catch-and-run to the Thiel one yard-line. After a penalty backed the Jackets up to the Tomcat 19, Richmond reeled in his second touchdown catch, despite being interfered with on the play. Waynesburg carried a 14-3 edge into halftime.
John Stewart (Lancaster, Pa. / JP McCaskey) intercepted Thiel's Daniel Rennie on a third-and-long and used a 19-yard return to set the Jackets up at the Thiel nine. Zayne Cawley (Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown) ran in for a touchdown on Waynesburg's first offensive snap after the pick to put the Jackets up 20-3 with 7:44 left in the third.
Thiel moved to Waynesburg territory early in the fourth quarter but Rennie was pressured by Virgil Doiron (New Martinsville, W.Va. / Valley) and had his errant pass intercepted by Jeremiah Hall returned 64 yards to the Thiel red zone. Drew Pinkerton (Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg) converted a 40-yard field goal to put the Jackets ahead 23-3 with 12 minutes to play.
Seniors Hunter Cameron (Armagh, Pa. / United) and Brian Scott-Hill (Dover, Del. / Polytech) each scored fourth quarter rushing touchdowns as Cameron dove to break the plane on a nine-yard scoring run and Scott-Hill powered in from two yards out. Waynesburg led 37-3 before a late Thiel touchdown brought the score to its final margin of 37-10.
Quarterback Samuel Barber (Johnstown, Pa. / Greater Johnstown) completed 14-of-17 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns, both to Richmond. Cawley added 81 yards on the ground and Isaac Trout (Ruffs Dale, Pa. / Southmoreland) had a season-best seven catches for 85 yards.
Jemuel Cypress (Seat Pleasant, Md. / Charles Herbert Flowers) finished with a season-high 13 tackles, a tackle for loss, forced fumble and pass break up. Quilik Wooten (Landover, Md. / Charles Herbert Flowers) had 10 tackles, a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry. Diontae Givens (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Sto-Rox) had two tackles for loss and a sack.
