WestConn Football Overwhelms Worcester State

More news about: Western Connecticut
DANBURY, Conn. - Senior RB Kamryn Holmes (Branford, Conn.) rushed 18 times for 107 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 61-7 win over the visiting Worcester State University Lancers in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) football action this afternoon at Westside Stadium.  WestConn, ranked No. 5 in New England, improves to 6-1 overall and 6-0 in the MASCAC with its sixth victory in a row.  The Wolves will face the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Corsairs in a battle of the last two MASCAC teams with undefeated league records next Saturday on the road at 3 p.m.

WestConn outgained Worcester State, 510-183, and scored at least 48 points for the fourth game in a row.  Thw Wolves started strong with a touchdown on its first play from scrimmage when senior QB John Giller (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) connected with sophomore WR Dae'Shawn Allen (White Plains, N.Y.) on a screen pass and Allen raced 36 yards to the end zone.  WestConn had excellent field position after a 16-yard Lancer punt, but missed the PAT to go ahead, 6-0, just 1:23 into the game.  The Wolves also missed a 30-yard field goal in the first quarter, but scored on a seven-yard run by Holmes to paydirt early in the second frame.  A second missed PAT by the Wolves made the score, 12-0, and Holmes added another seven-yard TD run with 6:07 left in the first half to make it, 19-0.  WestConn junior LB Justin Ingebrigtsen (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) blocked a Worcester State punt moments later to set Holmes for his third score on a one-yard plunge, and WestConn led, 26-0, at the break.

Sophomore Serge Lagardere (Stamford, Conn.) opened up the third quarter with a 57-yard kickoff return that led to another one-yard scoring rush by Holmes, but the Lancers answered with a 75-yard drive that ended with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Ayotte to Drew Van Klock with 7:41 on the clock.  WestConn took the momentum right back and completed their own 65-yard drive with Holmes fifth touchdown of the game on a five-yard run with 3:12 left in the third.  Kevin Franceschini (Yonkers, N.Y.) scored twice and sophomore QB Matt Xiques (Beachwood, N.J.) scored once in the fourth quarter to give eight rushing touchdowns in the game.  Junior DE Nick Simmons (Middletown, N.Y.) recovered a bad Lancer snap and returned the ball 13 yards to the one-yard line to set up Xiques score.

Giller finished 12-for-17 passing for 191 yards, while Franceschini totaled 56 rushing yards, senior WR Julian Ferguson (Enfield, Conn.) caught two passes for 78 yards, and Allen added 73 receiving yards.  Ayotte was 16-for-24 through the air for 103 yards and Nico Holmes led Worcester State with 102 yards on the ground, including a 73-yard run to the Wolves one-yard line that did not yield any points for the visitors.  Defensively, Ingebrigtsen and sophomore LB Dominic Rienzi (Brewster, N.Y.) had six tackles apiece and Rienzi added a sack and a pass breakup for the Wolves.  Worcester State's Micah Haynes made a game-high 11 tackles to go with a tackle for loss and a forced fumble and Bryan Agular added six hits and two pass breakups.
