Redlands Football falls at Pomona-Pitzer on late field goal

More news about: Redlands

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands football team (1-4, 1-2) scored on a 20-yard touchdown pass by Jayden Mckey to Cal Breen for an early 7-0 lead, but those would be the lone points as they lost 10-7 at Pomona-Pitzer.

The Bulldogs received the opening kickoff and marched right down the field and scored a touchdown on a 12-play 75-yard drive that included a 14-yard reception by Taylor Bowie, 14-yard rush by Calel Olicia-Aramboles, and then the 20-yard catch for Breen.

Late in the first the Sagehens took advantage of a fumble recovery at the Redlands 22 as they scored four plays later to tie it at seven.

The best drive after the touchdown started in the final 2:32 of the third as they had a 45-yard pass on 3rd and 6 by Breen.

At the start of the fourth they were at the Sagehen 12 with a 2nd and 8. The Bulldogs would go rush for 0 yards and then another completion to Breen, this time for seven yards, as he made it 4th and 1.

With the chance to take the lead, the short field goal was missed as Pomona-Pitzer took over at their own five with 13:30 left in the game.

Laurence Williams and the defense stepped up as he intercepted a pass at the Bulldog 32 to regain possession.

The proceeding possession, however, would end with a 41-yard Aidan Petruescu punt. The defense, though, were able to get off the field as Pomona-Pitzer missed a field goal and Redlands got the ball at their own 20 with 1:26 on the clock.

Following an incompletion the Sagehens forced an interception on a pass intended for Breen as they took over with 1:15 to play and the ball on the Bulldog 30.

On the sixth play of the Pomona-Pitzer drive they walked off the game with a game-winning field goal as time expired.

Olicia-Aramboles had 91 yards on 21 carries. Breen had a career-high 82 yards on five catches and a touchdown.

On defense they once again showed out, holding the Sagehens to 3.5 yards per rush, 3.2 yards per pass, and only 3.3 yards per play.

Craig Hunter and Williams both had 10 total tackles. Hunter also had a tackle for loss (TFL). Jaeden Thorn had a career day with seven tackles, three TFL, and a sack. Aaron Muniz made six stops with three going for a loss.

Redlands stays on the road as they head to California Lutheran University next Saturday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. as the two side play for the Smudge Pot Trophy.
