Hampden-Sydney Falls At Washington and Lee 28-26

More news about: Hampden-Sydney

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) passed for a game-high 232 yards and one touchdown, and sophomore wide receiver Ethan Dowdy (Powhatan) had a game-high and career-high 108 yards receiving while throwing his first career touchdown pass, as well, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a hard-fought 28-26 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football decision on the road at Washington and Lee University on Saturday afternoon in Lexington. Senior wide receiver Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) and senior tight end Sutton Lasso (Raleigh, NC) each had touchdown receptions for the visiting Tigers (3-2, 1-1), who led the host Generals (3-2, 2-0) 7-0 after one quarter, but trailed 14-13 at halftime and 21-19 after three quarters. Sophomore running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) added a rushing touchdown, and freshman strong safety Mitch Ladamus (Fort Mill, SC) had a career-high 12 tackles for the Garnet & Grey.

"Proud of the team's effort," said first-year head coach Vince Luvara. "Hats off to W&L, they made one more play than we did."

H-SC scored the first touchdown of the game after forcing a punt by W&L on the game's opening possession. The Tigers took over at their own six-yard line and promptly drove 94 yards on 14 plays, finishing with a five-yard shovel pass from Sido to Sutton Lasso for the score. Senior placekicker Elijah Swett (Matthews, NC) added the first of his two PAT kicks for the 7-0 advantage at 4:36 of the opening 15 minutes. The drive included a 12-yard run by Hicks, back-to-back runs of 16 and nine yards by senior running back JT Diehl (Warrenton), and an 11-yard reception by Hicks.

The Generals tied it at 7-7 with 9:58 on the clock in the second quarter after a one-yard touchdown run by Jacob Romero. Michael Fernandes added the first of his four PAT kicks for the 7-7 contest.

The Garnet & Grey went back ahead 10-7 after a 29-yard field goal by Swett at 5:26 of the second quarter. It was a quick five-play, 28-yard drive that featured a 26-yard pass from Sido to Dowdy, and was set-up when the defense forced a turnover on downs as junior linebacker and team captain Robert Clarke (Atlanta, Ga) had a seven-yard tackle for loss on fourth down

W&L, however, scored late in the quarter to go back in front 14-10 when Romero ran in from four yards out at 1:50. The Tigers, though, were able to quickly go 54 yards on 11 plays to set-up Swett for a 37-yard field goal with two-seconds left on the first-half clock. Fernandez kept the drive alive with a 13-yard reception on third-and-10, while Dowdy had four catches for 41 yards, and it was 14-13 at halftime.

The Generals added another touchdown in the third quarter when Marcus Payne scored on a six-yard run at 8:47 for a 21-13 advantage.

H-SC answered back late in the quarter with 2:22 on the clock when Dowdy tossed his first career touchdown pass, finding Fernandez open in the back of the end zone from 24 yards out. A two-point conversion pass attempt failed and the visitors trailed 21-19 after three quarters. Diehl had 17 yards on the ground to begin the drive, while Dowdy had a 21-yard reception from Sido on third-and-21, and Sido ran 12 yards on fourth-and-six …Sutton Lasso had a 13-yard catch just ahead of the touchdown, as well.

W&L added an early fourth quarter touchdown when Romero scored this third TD of the day from 12 yards out with 13:10 on the clock to make it 28-19.

The Tigers took their next possession and put together a 13-play, 73-yard drive that culminated with a one-yard touchdown run by Hicks with 8:48 remaining. Fernandez had a 22-yard catch to start the drive, and Sido kept the drive going with a 12-yard run on third-and-11, and a 12-yard pass to Sutton Lasso on third-and-10, while Hicks also added a 15-yard run on the possession—leaving the score at 28-26.

Unfortunately, H-SC never got the ball back as the hosts were able to run out the final 8:41 with a 78-yard drive on 16 plays that ended with three kneel downs inside the five-yard line.

Sido passed for his game-high 232 yards (22-31-0) and one touchdown with no interceptions for H-SC. Diehl rushed for a career-high 52 yards on 10 attempts. Hicks added 36 yards rushing on 12 attempts and one touchdown, adding 23 yards receiving on three receptions. Dowdy had his game-high and career-high 108 yards receiving on nine receptions, adding 24 yards passing (1-1-0) and one touchdown. Fernandez had 59 yards receiving on three receptions and one touchdown. Redshirt-freshman wide receiver Manning Lasso (Raleigh, NC) had 36 yards receiving on five receptions, while Sutton Lasso added 30 yards receiving on three receptions and one touchdown.

Ladamus finished with his career-high 12 tackles and one pass breakup for Tigers. Clarke had a career-high 11 tackles, including one for loss, while senior linebacker and team captain Brendan Wallace (Virginia Beach) and freshman linebacker Frank Brewer (Charlotte, NC) each added nine tackles, including 0.5 for loss each—a career-high for Brewer in his first extended action for the Garnet & Grey. Senior strong safety Seamus DeVol (Silver Spring, MD) also had a career-high nine tackles, while junior linebacker Eddie Allen (Richmond) contributed a career-high eight tackles, including one for loss, and a pass breakup.

Ty Collins passed for 24 yards (2-8-0) with no interceptions for W&L. Romero had a game-high 148 yards rushing on 25 attempts and three touchdowns, and Payne had 53 yards rushing on eight attempts and one touchdown. Jalen Todd had a game-high 14 tackles, including one for loss, for the Generals.

H-SC will play on the road again next week at ODAC member Ferrum College on Saturday, October 19, at 2 p.m. in Ferrum.
