BUENA VISTA, Va. - Ethan Beamish matched the program single-game record for touchdown passes, while Zackary Orr recorded the longest punt return touchdown in program history as the Brevard College football team (2-1, 2-0 USA South) returned to the gridiron with a bang, scoring its most points since 2017 with a thorough 55-21 thrashing of Southern Virginia University (0-5, 0-3 USAS) on Saturday at Knight Stadium in Buena Vista, Virginia.
With the victory, Brevard improved to 2-0 in USA South Conference play. The 55 points scored on Saturday are the program's most since 2017, when the Tornados scored 63 points (Sept. 16, Greensboro) and 58 points (Oct. 28, NC Wesleyan). The Tornados also improve to 8-0 all-time against SVU, BC's best record over any team in its program history.
Beamish, a junior quarterback in his second season as the signal caller for the Tornados, matched his career high set last season at LaGrange with 315 passing yards on 18 completions. The Simpsonville, South Carolina product threw for a career-high five touchdowns, which matches the single-game program record set three times - most recently by BC alum Dalton Cole on November 17, 2018 at Allen University. Beamish also accounted for 14 net rushing yards for a 329-yard performance.
Brevard's rushing attack was paced by its experienced duo of senior Chancellor Lee-Parker and transfer senior Jadien Deaton. Lee-Parker, a third-year Tornado from Auburn, Georgia, put together his sixth 100-plus yard performance of his BC career with 123 yards on 11 rushes that included a 63-yard touchdown scamper - his sixth score of the season. Deaton, a first-year Tornado from New Albany, Mississippi, totaled 96 yards on 11 attempts. Sophomore running back DJ Henderson added 37 yards of his own to round out the BC ground game.
Fifth-year senior wideout Zackary Orr turned in an all-around performance, logging six catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns while also taking a program-record 88-yard punt return to the house. Adam Douglas (4 rec, 62 yds, 1 TD) and Cooper Hogan (5 rec, 57 yds, 1 TD) each had multiple receptions as well, while Reggie Taylor II scored on his lone catch of the day, a 43-yard connection.
Senior placekicker Hugo Taylor had a big performance going a perfect 7-for-7 on extra-point attempts while nailing both of his field goal attempts (31, 21 yards). Brevard's offense kept Nicholas Acus busy on kickoffs, as the Inman, South Carolina native booted 10 kickoffs away.
Adam Chaney, a graduate transfer from Saraland, Alabama by way of Campbellsville and Cumberlands, enjoyed a breakout performance on the defensive side of the ball. The linebacker led all Tornados with 10 tackles, two tackles-for-loss, and a quarterback sack. Baylee Ramey registered seven tackles, while Carter Raulerson, Justice Redmond, and James Woods each logged four tackles apiece. Hunter Davis, Roberts Dorsey, Hot Rod Fitten, and Ernest Smith II all combined for quarterback sacks, and Smith II recorded the first interception of his five-year Tornado career.
Brevard capped its first drive of the game off with a 31-yard field goal from Taylor, taking the early 3-0 lead. After stopping SVU's first drive, Beamish connected with Orr for a 40-yard touchdown score to extend the advantage to 10-0.
BC's defense forced another stop and Orr capitalized with his second touchdown of the game, returning the Knight punt 88 yards for the special teams score. Brevard forced its third-straight stop of SVU, but the Knight defense answered with an interception.
Brevard's fourth stop of the game was capped off with Chaney's 12-yards QB sack. Lee-Parker joined the offensive party with a 63-yards touchdown score on the ensuing possession that gave Brevard a 24-0 lead.
The Tornados once again forced a three-and-out, this time emphasized by Davis and Fitten's drive-ending sack. Brevard put together a lengthy drive that ended in points as Taylor made his second field goal of the contest to stretch the advantage to a 27-0 margin.
Brevard forced another Southern Virginia punt, and Beamish found Hogan for a 14-yard touchdown that gave the Tornados a 34-0 lead. Southern Virginia broke through on its next possession, as Devin Watson rushed for a 16-yard touchdown. The contest entered the halftime intermission with BC on top 34-7.
BC forced a punt on SVU's first drive of the second half, and Beamish took advantage, finding Orr for a 31-yard touchdown score. SVU would go on to miss a field goal on its next possession, but Brevard turned it over for the second time in the game and Southern Virginia capitalized as Tre Kelso punched in a nine-yard touchdown run.
Beamish kicked off the fourth quarter with his fourth touchdown pass of the game, handing Brevard a 48-14 lead after a 17-yard touchdown pass to Douglas. Smith II picked off his first career pass on the next Knight drive, but the Tornados coughed the ball up for the third time in the game on the ensuing possession.
SVU scored its third touchdown of the game with 3:19 left to play as Devin Watson found Alex Silvester for a 36-yard touchdown reception. Beamish hit Taylor II in stride for a 43-yard score, capping off Brevard's 55-21 victory.
The Tornados outpaced SVU 596-373 in total offense, holding a dominant 281-77 advantage on the ground. Brevard's defense forced seven Southern Virginia punts, but the Knights won the turnover battle 3-1. Brevard went 6-for-11 on third down conversions, 3-for-4 on red zone scoring opportunities, and converted its only fourth down try.
Brevard is back at home next Saturday, October 12 in a 6 p.m. kickoff against Greensboro College.
