GRANVILLE, Ohio (Sept. 28) – Tyler Green passed for three touchdowns and Collin Murphy returned an interception 62 yards for a score to highlight a 35-0 shutout win for Denison University over visiting Hiram College in a North Coast Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Deeds Field – Piper Stadium.
Denison improves to 2-0 in NCAC play with its second-straight shutout. The Big Red are 2-2 overall. Hiram falls to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The win is the ninth-straight for the Big Red over the Terriers.
The Denison defense forced a turnover on downs on Hiram's opening possession of the game. The Big Red were able to drive 46 yards on eight plays to score the game's first touchdown. Trey Fabrocini plunged in from two yards out for the score. The point after by Daniel Cunningham made it 7-0 at the 7:24 mark of the opening quarter.
Murphy intercepted a Hiram pass and returned it 62 yards for a defensive score early in the second quarter. The pick six by Murphy stretched the advantage to 14-0 just 19 seconds into the second quarter made it 14-0 Big Red.
Denison was able to take advantage of a short field to score its third touchdown of the day. The Big Red needed just four plays to score after starting a drive on Hiram's 24-yard line. Green found Cade Nowik for a 12-yard touchdown strike that made it 21-0 at the 5:48 mark.
Fabrocini added a second touchdown of the day, this time a six-yard catch from Green, to cap a 13-play, 75-yard drive. The drive chewed up nearly seven minutes of game time as Denison swelled its lead to 28-0 midway through the third.
The Big Red defense was able to secure its second-consecutive shutout with strong play in the second half. Murphy added a second interception, this one came after a Hiram heave to the end zone on a 4th down play in the third quarter.
Denison concluded the scoring with its longest touchdown of the day. Green connected with Logan Yater for a 51-yard scoring strike on the first play of a fourth quarter drive. The PAT by Cunningham brought the lead to 35-0 with 6:58 to play.
Green finished 21-of-24 with 227 passings. He tossed three touchdowns and did not issue a turnover in the game.
Fabrocini eclipsed the 100-yard mark for a third time this season and 20th time in his career. He finished with 116 yards on 23 carries.
Yater had the team-high with 71 yards receiving. Aidan Brownlee hauled in a game-high six receptions.
Drew Duffy continued his stellar sophomore season. Duffy finished with nine tackles, three of which went for loss.
Murphy had the two interceptions, a blocked field goal and three tackles.
Denison had advantages in first downs (23-11) and total yards (382-194). DU was 6-of-12 on third down conversions.
The Big Red continued to be strong against the run, as they limited Hiram to just 43 yards on 26 carries.
Following three-straight home games, Denison hits the road for an NCAC matchup at Wittenberg on Saturday, Oct. 5. The Big Red and Tigers will kick off at 2 p.m. at Edwards-Maurer Field in Springfield.
