PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The University of Dubuque held the host UW-Platteville Pioneers without a touchdown in the opening quarter and trailed by just three points. UD scored their lone score in the second quarter after Joey Rhomberg found Za'Cameron Brice for a 16 yard touchdown with 11:45. The Pioneers, who are are receiving votes for the top 25, held a 24-7 halftime lead before adding 14 points in the third. The two teams would both be held scoreless in the final quarter to end the game 38-7 in favor of the Pioneers.
The Spartans played without some key components to their game on Saturday night with various injuries. Sitting out was starting quarterback Ben Gultig who threw for nearly 300 yards in the season opener. Running back Fabian Jackson who pounded out 67 yards against #13 ranked Aurora University, wide receiver Hunter Preston who caught four passes for 34 yards. Benjamin Rodriguez grabbed the start, but freshman Joey Rhomberg was 25-49 for 194 yards in his first action behind center. Rhomberg led the rushing attack with nine carries for 10 yards after the Spartans rushed 19 times for six yards.
Jamari Jenkins led the receiving corp with eight catches for 70 yards with his longest being for 22 yards. Za'Cameron Brice, last week's D3football.com wide receiver of the week, caught seven receptions for 63 yards with his longest catch being a 16 yard touchdown grab.
Defensively, UD was led by Channing Williams with nine tackles, including one for a loss. Parker Navitsky grabbed six tackles, and five Spartans finished with four tackles each. In special teams, CJ Dean punted six times for 178 yards with his longest being for 42 yards. Blake Heffron returned one kick for 14 yards. Joseph Xiya kicked off twice for 100 yards and was a perfect 1-1 in extra points.
As a team UD garnered 18 first downs and were held to 206 yards in 71 plays in 25:24 of possession time. The Spartans were 4-16 in third down conversions and 1-3 in fourth down conversions and finished 1-3 in red zone chances.
The Spartans (0-2 overall, 0-0 in A-R-C) return home to Chalmers Field on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1:00 p.m. on Senior Day vs. the Simpson College Storm (1-1 overall, 0-0 in A-R-C). Simpson enters conference play with a 45-7 victory over Crown College (Minn.) on Saturday.
