Chapman wins inaugural SCIAC Championship game

More news about: Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. — Football took home a 41-20 victory over Pomona-Pitzer in the inaugural SCIAC Championship game, punching its ticket to the NCAA tournament next weekend.

Six interceptions from the defense, including three from Roman Hardin and three in the endzone made the difference in the 21-point Panther rout.

Chapman came to play out of the gates putting up 24 first-half points, leading 24-0 heading into the locker room. Quarterback Luke Peterman threw for 177 of his 307 yards in the first half, including two touchdown passes — one to Isaiah Woods, the first touchdown of the day, and another to Jason Bruce.

The duo of Woods and Gio Ursino in the backfield combined for 164 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. Ursino ran for 88 yards.

The Panthers' defense allowed 62 yards of offense — only two on the ground — through the first two quarters, and forced two turnovers. Chapman was constantly in the back field breaking up passes and creating negative plays.

The third quarter, however, the Panthers returned to the field flat, allowing 20 points in the quarter. Pomona-Pitzer cut the score to just seven, 27-20 behind 174 yards of offense, and 150 passing yards.

Chapman regained its momentum when Kyle Sieben snagged his first of two interceptions in the end zone. Quickly following a Chapman three-and-out, the Sagehens took the ball back into the red zone where Sieben intercepted another ball on an identical play.

Chapman scored on its next two offensive possessions, two Peterman deep balls, one to James Crowell for 35 yards and a 48 yarder for Bruce's second touchdown of the day.

Kade Jordan picked off Sagehens' quarterback Grady Russo one final time for good measure before the Panthers kneeled it out to end the game.

Football will learn its fate in the selection show tomorrow at 2 p.m. PST airing on NCAA.com.
