More news about: Belhaven

LAGRANGE, Ga. - The Belhaven Football team improved to 6-0 (4-0 USAC) as they took care of LaGrange, 42-20, at Callaway Stadium on Saturday. The Blazers scored 35 unanswered in the opening half to cruise to the road win.

The Panthers were on the move on their opening drive of the game, but Dee Gray picked off a pass in the end zone to shift the momentum to the Blazers' side. Belhaven scored the first points of the game a few drives later as Tim Johnson connected with wideout Nygil Owens for a 23-yard score with 5:24 left in the opening quarter.

The Blazers went to work in the second quarter, outscoring the hosts 28-6 in the frame to take control. Johnson found tight end Brooks Brymer for a 35-yard touchdown to go up 14-0 with 12:40 to go in the half. Kolbe Blunt went for an explosive 63-yard touchdown run on the Blazers' first play of their next drive to take a 21-0 lead.

Belhaven wasted no time finding the endzone on their next possession as Johnson hit Phabian Carter for a 44-yard touchdown strike midway through the quarter. Cornerback Cornelius Clay gave the offense the ball back after intercepting a Panther pass on the Blazers' side of the field.

Johnson once again connected with Nygil Owens for a 33-yard score to give the Blazers a commanding 35-0 lead with 5:30 left in the half. LaGrange got on the board on their last drive of the half, but Carlton Brown blocked the PAT to put the halftime margin at 35-6.

A quick three-and-out gave Belhaven the ball back, and they capped off a successful 10-play, 61-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run from Alex Burns, the first of his career. A couple of 4th-quarter touchdowns from LaGrange tightened the margin, but it was another dominant win for the Blazers who stay unbeaten with their sixth win of the season.

Tim Johnson was efficient through the air, going 11-for-15 for 224 yards and four touchdowns. Kolbe Blunt added 109 and a score on the ground on seven carries, while Devin Daniels went for 68 yards on 10 attempts. Wide receiver Nygil Owens had a career day for the Blazers, catching five passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Brooks Brymer and Phabian Carter also added touchdown receptions.

Jay'Den Jones and Josiah Raymond each had six tackles to lead the defense, with Jones forcing a fumble as well. Kody McCraney forced and recovered a fumble to go along with two stops. Cornerbacks Dee Gray and Cornelius Clay came away with interceptions as part of the three turnovers forced by the Blazers' defense on the day.

Belhaven returns to the Bowl next Saturday, October 21st for Homecoming against Methodist. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 PM.
