JACKSON, Miss. – It was a successful Homecoming for the Belhaven Football team as the Blazers cruised to a 45-10 win over Methodist on Saturday at the Belhaven Bowl Stadium. With the win, Belhaven improves to 7-0 (5-0 USAC) heading into back-to-back road matchups at Maryville and Southern Virginia.
After the Blazers defense forced a three-and-out on the opening possession of the game, Signal-caller Tim Johnson and the offense wasted no time getting into a groove. A long pass from Johnson to Cooper Tullo set up a five-yard touchdown run from running back Kolbe Blunt to put the Blazers up 7-0 four minutes into the game.
Johnson then found Bogan Brewer on the next offensive drive for a six-yard score midway through the opening quarter. After Josiah Raymond intercepted an errant Monarch pass deep in their own territory, Blunt found the endzone for the second time from 18-yards out to put Belhaven in front 21-0 with 11:05 left in the half.
Methodist found the scoreboard for the first time via field goal after a lengthy drive. The Blazers answered with three points of their own as Constantine Hontzas connected on a 32-yard field goal to make it 24-3 going into the halftime festivities.
Belhaven received the ball coming out of the locker room and make quick work as Blunt capped off a three-play, 69-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run. Devin Daniels joined in on the scoring parade from a yard out to put the Blazers up 38-3 late in the third quarter.
After another fourth down stop by the Belhaven defense, Brock Morris hit Zach Hammett for a 16-yard touchdown pass to push the Blazers past the 40-point mark for a fourth time this season. The visitors found paydirt for the first time late in the fourth, but it was all academic as Belhaven secured another comfortable win to stay atop the USA South Standings with three games remaining.
It was another dominant performance from the Blazers on Saturday. Tim Johnson threw for 231 yards and a score on 12-of-20 passing. Brock Morris also threw a touchdown pass, the first of his Belhaven career. Do-it-all back Kolbe Blunt ran for 104 yards and three touchdowns as he continues to close in on the all-time rushing yards record at Belhaven.
The top defensive unit in the USA South once again played like it. The Blazers recovered two fumbles, an interception, and turned Methodist over on downs four times. Landry Huddleston, Carlton Brown, and Omar Ramey all forced fumbles while Josiah Raymond came up with his first pick of the season.
Belhaven looks to avenge last season's loss to Maryville next Saturday, October 28th. Kickoff between the Blazers and Scots is set for 12:00 PM.
