Wild Finish to Spartans Football Final Home Game

More news about: Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque football team final home game in 2023 provided plenty of interesting moments in the final minutes. The past five meetings entering Saturday's contest against the Coe College Kohawks were all decided by a touchdown or less. The 2023 match-up once again proved the two squads wanted to continue the streak. At the end of regulation the game was knotted at 17-17. Coe won the toss and elected to defend. UD was stopped and converted a 41 yard field goal by Liam Smith in the overtime to lead 20-17. Coe's possession looked like the Spartans had stopped the offense on a fourth down and yard to go at UD's five yard line. A late yellow flag was tossed as the Spartans began to celebrate, UD was flagged for 12 men on the field, which gave the Kohawks first and goal at the two yard line. Coe ran the ball only to have it stripped, unfortunately for the Spartans the ball bounced into the end zone and was recovered by Coe's Ray Seidel for the touchdown and game winning score 23-20.

Coe scored first at 11:25 of the first quarter on a 36 yard pass play. UD scored 10 minutes later on a Conner Halla field goal from 25 yards after a nine play 57 yard drive (3-7). A second on the clock allowed Coe to convert a 20 yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter to extend their lead to seven points at halftime, UD scored late in the third quarter when K.C. Moore found Za'Cameron Brice caught a pass for 70 yards with 1:30 to go, just three plays in eight yards and a time of possession of 1;14. The duo scored quickly in the fourth once again at 14:02 on a 41 yard touchdown on a two play 44 yard drive to take their first lead of the game 17-10. Coe responded with a yard touchdown run with 4:31 left on a 13 play, 45 yard drive to tie the game.

The Spartans finished the afternoon with 347 yards of offense while holding the Kohawks to 306 yards. Coe held a slim advantage in possession time 31:52 to UD's 28:08. The Spartans converted on just one of 14 third downs as Coe converted on 7-21 third downs. Coe scored in 3-4 red zone opportunities and UD was 1-2.

K.C. Moore completed 20-40 pass attempts for 287 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Devin Moore rushed 12 times for 39 yards and Lovell Armstead carried the ball seven times for 21 yards. Brice led all receivers with five catches for 133 yards. UD's defense sacked Coe' play caller seven times. Garrett Hertzfeldt led with 12 tackles and a sack. Alex Rashid finished with 10 tackles and three pass breakups. Dalton Wood had nine tackles and a forced fumble.

Conner Halla punted eight times for 300 yards with one touchback. Preston Hunter returned two kickoffs for 39 yards and returned two punts for nine yards. Gary Quintrell intercepted a pass and returned it nine yards. Liam Smith kicked off four times for 229 yards (57.3 avg.).

The Spartans (4-5 overall, 4-3 in A-R-C) travel north to Decorah, Iowa for their final game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 12:00 p.m. vs. the Luther College Norse (0-9 overall, 0-7 in A-R-C).
