More news about: Case Western Reserve

Case Western Reserve University senior quarterback recorded his second-straight 300-yard passing game and threw for four touchdowns to lead the Spartans to a 42-14 win over Allegheny College on Senior Day at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 7-2, marking the most wins by the team since the 2019 campaign. CWRU will head into the final week of the season one game behind Carnegie Mellon for second place in the league, with the Spartans and the Tartans set to meet in Pittsburgh next weekend. Allegheny, which will have its open week next week, finished the 2023 campaign with a 3-7 record.

The Spartans offense totaled a season-high 548 yards, including 355 through the air and 193 rushing. Fromberg, who left the game with a large lead after two and a half quarters, completed 15-of-20 passes (75% completion percentage) and 349 yards, the second-highest single game total of his career. Junior wide receiver Noah Coyne recorded his second-straight 100-yard receiving effort, notching 138 yards on four catches, including a pair of touchdowns, and now has 886 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns this season. Senior wide receivers Michael Wojkowski and Riley Knurek each added a touchdown catch, while sophomore running back Christopher Lim and senior quarterback Albert Wilhelmy each ran for touchdowns.

Defensively, the Spartans held the Gators to 268 yards, including just 18 rushing yards, as Allegheny converted just two of their 14 third down attempts in the game. Senior defensive end Kaden Tong finished the game with 1.5 sacks to increase his season total to 8.5 (tied for the 10th-most in a single season in program history) and 23 for his career (the sixth-most in program history). Senior defensive end AJ Dudowski added six tackles and a sack with a forced fumble, and junior cornerback Dominic Sais picked off his sixth pass of the season, tied for the eighth-most in a single season in program history.

CWRU took an early lead in the game, when a 53-yard pass from Fromberg to junior running back Gage Duesler led to a 12-yard touchdown run by Lim on the next play, giving the Spartans a 7-0 advantage with 7:55 left in the first. Later in the quarter, a 17-yard punt return by sophomore TJ Yoder gave the Spartans a short field, and Fromberg led the team on a seven-play, 40-yard drive, capped off by a 10-yard touchdown pass to Wojkowski with 2:42 left in the opening frame.

Allegheny cut the Spartans' lead in half with a long touchdown pass early in the second quarter, but CWRU would score twice more in the half to take a 28-7 lead into the break. With 3:17 left in the half, Fromberg converted a fourth-and-six with a 21-yard touchdown strike to Knurek, and then after the defense forced a three-and-out, Fromberg connected with Coyne for a 59-yard touchdown pass with 1:42 remaining in the period.

CWRU continued to add to the lead, going 69 yards on eight plays on the opening drive of the second half and scoring on a seven-yard pass from Fromberg to Coyne to take a 35-7 lead. With 34 seconds remaining in the third, Wilhelmy put a bow on Senior Day with his first career touchdown, running the ball in from seven yards out to extend the lead to 42-7.

Allegheny scored midway through the final quarter, but it was too little too late for the Gators.

Prior to the start of the game, the Spartans held a special 'Senior Day' ceremony to honor the team's 27 graduating players. The group improved to 19-10 over the last three seasons with the win, including a 17-9 record in PAC games.

The Spartans will conclude their 2023 season next weekend with its annual rivalry game, the 37th-Annual Academic Bowl against Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, November 11 in Pittsburgh. Kickoff from Gesling Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
