Second Half Comeback Falls Short Against Warhawks

OSHKOSH, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh football team mounted a 15-point comeback in the fourth quarter against UW-Whitewater but fell short, losing 37-21 on Saturday (Sept. 30).

The Titans (2-2, 0-1 WIAC), ranked No. 20 by D3football.com hosted the Warhawks (4-0, 1-0 WIAC), ranked No. 4, at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium on Saturday in the 115th matchup between the historic programs. Both the 2023 UW-Oshkosh Hall of Fame Class and the 1968 WIAC championship team were honored at the stadium.

Kobe Berghammer (Sr. • Clayton) completed 14 of his 27 passing attempts for 209 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 40 yards on 10 attempts. He also committed three interceptions.

Dan Fynaardt (Jr. • Waukesha) caught three passes which accumulated for 98 yards and one score. Trae Tetzlaff (Jr. • Waukesha) finished the day with two touchdowns on five catches for 43 yards.

On defense, Carson Raddatz (Sr. • Fond du Lac) and Justin Tenpas (Jr. • Sheboygan Falls) led the Titans with eight tackles. Raddatz also had two pass breakups. Jared Saad (Sr. • Naperville, Ill.), Bryce Edwards (Jr. • Sparta) and Kyle Dietzen (So. • Omro) each recorded six tackles. Dietzen intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and returned the ball for three yards.

After an unsuccessful punt for Whitewater and a punt for Oshkosh, the Warhawks scored first on a short pass to the endzone. The Warhawks also scored on their next three possessions with two touchdowns and a field goal. At halftime, Oshkosh trailed Whitewater 23-0.

UW-Oshkosh scored first in the second half. The team marched down the field in 11 plays which culminated in a 5-yard pass from Berghammer to Tetzlaff.

The Warhawks extended their lead to 31 points on a 17-yard rush by Tamir Thomas and an interception turned touchdown by Joey Antonietti.

The Titans scored twice in the fourth quarter in an attempt to close the gap. Fynaardt caught his first touchdown of the season on a 71-yard catch and run to make the score 37-13 and Tetzlaff dove into the endzone on a 7-yard play to bring the score to 37-20 after Dietzen's interception.

UW-Oshkosh got the ball back one more time in the game, however the drive ended in Berghammer's final interception of the game.

The Titans will hit the road next weekend for a 2 p.m. game at UW-Stout on Saturday (Oct. 7) at the Blue Devils' Don and Nona Williams Stadium. UW-Oshkosh currently holds a 42-33-1 record against the Blue Devils and has won the last 12 matchups. The Titans have outscored the Blue Devils 438-181 since 2011.
