McCorkle Becomes Program's Wins Leader in Shutout of Greensboro

More news about: Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Football team opened up the 2023 USA South slate with a 34-0 shutout of Greensboro College on Saturday at the Belhaven Bowl Stadium. It was a historic win for the Blazers as Head Coach Blaine McCorkle surpassed Joseph Thrasher as the football program's all-time wins leaders with 25.

The Blazers was dominant on the defensive side all day long, and they got going early by forcing a Greensboro fumble that Carlton Brown recovered deep in Pride territory. Belhaven capitalized as kicker Constantine Hontzas knocked through a 33-yard field goal to get the scoring started with five minutes to go in the first quarter. After another defensive stop, Tim Johnson found Cooper Tullo across the middle, and the speedy receiver broke free for a 38-yard score.

The Blazers added another touchdown in the second quarter after a 13-play, 93-yard drive was capped off by a Johnson quarterback sneak to give Belhaven a 16-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

The offense wasted no time finding the endzone in the second half as Johnson found Jacobey James-Grace from 40 yards out to go up 22-0. Another quick three-and-out set up another Belhaven score as Kolbe Blunt found paydirt for a 42-yard touchdown run to give the Blazers a 28-0 advantage.

A muffed punt gave the Pride the ball back deep in Belhaven territory, but Dee Gray halted the drive with an interception near the goaline to give the Blazers possession.

Belhaven tacked on their fifth and final touchdown of the game midway through the fourth as Caleb Gallashaw scored from five yards out to put a stamp on the 34-0 win.

The Belhaven defense was stout from the opening kickoff. Greensboro managed just 122 total yards of offense with just 11 coming on the ground. Carlton Brown led the way with seven tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery. Dee Gray came up with his first pick of the year.

Offensively, the Blazers racked up 425 total yards and 22 first downs. Tim Johnson threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns on 10-of-20 passing. Kolbe Blunt led Belhaven on the ground with 110 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Cooper Tullo hauled in a team-high three passes for 71 yards and a score.

Belhaven hits the road next Saturday, September 30th as they travel to Rocky Mount, N.C. to take on North Carolina Wesleyan. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM.
