Auggies dominate Eagles in season-opener

MINNEAPOLIS -- Quarterback Cade Sheehan (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) completed 16-of-26 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns, leading a 469-yard offensive effort for the Augsburg University football in its season-opening 52-10 nonconference win over the University of Northwestern-St. Paul on Friday night at Edor Nelson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Leading 7-3 early in the second quarter, the Auggies ran off 31 unanswered points to take a commanding 38-3 lead three minutes into the fourth quarter. Augsburg outgained Northwestern by a 469-293 margin with a balanced offensive attack -- rushing for 201 yards and passing for 268 yards.
• Eight of Augsburg's 12 drives resulted in scores. The Auggies held a 32:16-to-27:44 advantage in possession time, and averaged 7.2 yards per-play on 65 plays.
• Wide receiver Braden Tretter (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) caught six passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns -- a 46-yarder to open the scoring 2:45 into the game, and a 19-yarder midway through the second quarter. Tretter recorded his seventh career 100-yard receiving game.
• Dominic Smith (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) caught seven passes for 119 yards and a third-quarter, 66-yard touchdown for the Auggies, joining Tretter with his seventh career 100-yard receiving effort.
• Sheehan claimed his 10th career game with three or more touchdown passes, and his 11th career game with 250 or more passing yards.
• Running back DJ Monroe (SR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) rushed 20 times for 97 yards and a touchdown, a four-yard score early in the fourth quarter. Isaiah Thompson (JR, Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes HS) rushed four times for 37 yards, scoring an 11-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
• Augsburg's defense limited Northwestern to a 5.0 yards per-play average on 59 plays, and claimed six tackles for-loss in the game. The Auggies also claimed a pair of second-half interceptions that led to touchdowns on subsequent drives -- a pickoff and 38-yard return by Leban Kahin (JR, Edina, Minn./Edina HS) on the last play of the third-quarter, and an interception by Gerald Shepherd (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) with a 32-yard return with 4:16 left to play.
• Justin Tverberg (SR, Farmington, Minn./Hastings HS) and Lionel Gates (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had eight tackles (four solo) each for the Auggies. Tverberg and Ethan Tegels (JR, Cadott, Wis./Cadott HS) shared a sack. Tegels had seven tackles (two solo), and Brandon Sjostrand (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had six tackles (one solo).
• Nathan Wangensteen (SO, Chisholm, Minn./Chisholm HS) connected on a 23-yard field goal late in the second quarter, and hit all seven of his extra-point attempts.
• Auggie reserves closed the game with a pair of touchdowns, as backup quarterback Ryan Harvey (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) threw his first collegiate touchdown pass, an eight-yarder to Tyrone Wilson (SO, Ellendale, Minn./New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva HS), and Will Smith (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./North HS) scored on a six-yard touchdown run.

FOR THE FOES
• Caden Cantrel completed 14-of-31 passes for 179 yards for Northwestern, with Beau Burk catching seven passes for 80 yards.
• Dominic Borges kicked a 26-yard field goal early in the second quarter, and Sivert Klefsaas scored on a four-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.
• Jayden Goodwin had nine tackles (four solo) for the Eagles.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg will take a week off before returning for a home nonconference game against Martin Luther College on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
