ALMA, Mich. - The Spartan football team traveled to Alma this past Saturday to take on the Scots for a nonconference matchup. The Spartans fell by a score of 7-49.
Alma struck early and often, scoring touchdowns on their first three drives of the game. Manchester struggled to respond as the score at the half was a lopsided 0-42.
The second half showed more promise for Manchester as they were able to hold Alma to punt on their first two drives of the third quarter. On the Scots third drive the Sophomore Markell Jackson (Sarasota, Fla., Manatee) was able to intercept Cater St. John. The interception return set up the Spartans at the Alma 13. The Black & Gold were able to capitalize on the turnover as Trevor O'Brien II (Vero Beach, Fla., Vero Beach) was able to connect with Gabe Melvin (Jacksonville, Fla., Atlantic Coast) for a 6 yard touchdown reception. Extra point attempt made by Matthew Mason (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio, Riverdale) brought the Spartans closer 7-42.
The Scots lead however was too large for the Spartans to overcome as the score finished at 7-49 when the final whistle blew.
Manchester falls to an even 1-1 on the year while Alma improves to a perfect 2-0. The Spartans will be back on the road this upcoming Saturday traveling to Illinois to take on Greenville University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern time, 1 p.m. Central time. Game day information can be found at muspartans.com or on any of the Manchester Athletics socials.
