UD Spartans Football Fall Short In Final A-R-C Game of 2022, Lose to Dutch 21-24

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque football looking for a possible share of the American Rivers Conference title, would lost their final game of 2022 to the Central College Dutch 21-24 in a chilly, windy, snowy filled afternoon on Chalmers Field.

The Midwest weather was 72 degrees on Thursday in Dubuque, Saturday the two football teams would fight off fluffy snow, sleet, and cold conditions at game time. Central jumped out to an early lead 17-0 before the Spartans rallied scoring the next three touchdowns to hold the 21-17 lead with 2:57 left of the third quarter. Central would take the final lead for good at 13:14 of the fourth on a two yard rush for the go ahead score 24-21. A couple of late rallies would fall short and the Spartans would finish their season 6-4 overall and 6-2 in the A-R-C.

Ben Gultig led the Spartans with 300 yards passing and completed 28-42 pass attempts for three scores. He found Jamari Jenkins for the first touchdown on a 15 yard pass at 8:32 of the second quarter. Za'Cameron Brice grabbed a 10 yard pass for the Spartans second touchdown at 5:56 of the third quarter. Wade Sheets found the end zone from 39 yards out down the left side for UD's final points of the afternoon at 2:57 of the third quarter.

The two teams showcased their defenses with neither squad looking to bend. Central ended the day with eight tackles for losses of 36 yards while the host Spartans collected six tackles for losses of 18 yards. Central held the ground attack from UD to a slim 28 yards in 22 carries. Each squad had three sacks, the Dutch had three quarterback hurries and UD finished with two. CJ Dean led UD with eight solo tackles and five assisted tackles. Brock Carter led UD with nine solos and had two assisted tackles and recovered one fumble.

Central ended the day with a total of 440 yards and held the Spartans to 328 total yards. The time of possession was in favor of the Dutch 30:09 to UD's 29:51.

UD will kick off their 2023 season at a team yet to be announce on Sept. 2. The Spartans return home on Sept. 9 for their opener on Chalmers Field vs. UW-Platteville.
