Seidel's 152 Rushing Yards Lifts Football Past (RV) Central, Defense Continues Torrid Turnover Pace

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College football team took down (RV) Central College 37-31 on Saturday afternoon at Clark Field. The Kohawks, who dedicated the video board at the stadium to legendary former coach Steve Staker, got contributions from all three units in the victory, getting key plays from the offense, defense and special teams. Central took the game's first lead with an opening-drive touchdown but Coe responded with 20 unanswered points before the final minute of the first half. The Dutch kept it close at the break, scoring a late touchdown in the second quarter to make it 20-14 after two periods. 
 
Coe and Central matched each other in the third and fourth quarters, scoring 14 and three points respectively in the periods. The hosts got a pair of third-quarter touchdown runs from Ray Seidel, who carried the rock for a career-high 152 yards on another career-high 36 totes. The Kohawks secured the win in the final quarter, getting a 22-yard field goal from Julian Garcia Ayala who made it a two-score game. Coe's defense clinched the victory late in the fourth quarter, coming up with a pair of red zone stops including an interception from Jack Shaw on the penultimate drive. The Kohawk defense came up with four more turnovers in the victory and now has 21 for the season. The win is Coe's second in a row and moves the Kohawks to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the A-R-C while Central drops to 5-3 and 3-3 in the league.

  • Carter Maske was 23-of-46 passing on the day, backing up a career day against Loras with a solid effort against the Dutch. Maske completed 50 percent of his passes on the day and racked up 305 yards and two touchdowns. Carter, who was sacked just once after an impressive effort from the offensive line, tossed two more touchdowns while eclipsing the 300-yard mark for the second-straight game. The junior from Waterloo connected with six different receivers on the day and found Dominic Shepardson and Zamari Bruce for touchdowns. 
  • Ray Seidel was the bell cow for the Kohawks, piling up all 36 of Coe's running back rushes. The Cedar Falls native had a 4.2 yards per carry average and finished with three touchdowns in the game. His long run went for 21-yards, slicing through the Dutch defense early in the third quarter to convert a third-and-one. Ray, who set a new career-high in carries, yards and touchdowns is now up to 11 total touchdowns for 2022. 
  • Dominic Shepardson was the catalyst for Coe's passing attack all day, working himself open throughout the contest while catching a team-high 11 passes. The senior, who eclipsed the 600-yard mark for the season, registered a new career-best with 143 yards. One of Shepardson's highlight reel plays came in the first quarter when he caught a 15-yard pass from Maske along the near sideline before juking a pair of Dutch defenders and beating the rest of the defense to the end zone. Cooper Zeck also posted a career-high 71 yards for the Kohawks, hauling in three passes out of the tight end slot. Amel Saric was second on the squad with four catches, turning his chances into 47 yards. Freshman Zamari Bruce scored for the sixth time in 2022, registering a pair of catches for 22 yards and the score. 
  • The Kohawks got an impressive effort from everyone on the defensive side of the ball, racking up eight tackles for loss, four picks and three sacks. Jay Oostendorp was a man on a mission, registering eight tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one pass break up and one QB hurry. The junior from Cedar Rapids recorded his sack on the second to last drive for the Dutch, backing up the visitors with an 11-yard stop. Jack Shaw also turned in an impressive effort for Coe, finishing with nine tackles to lead the team while adding a career-high two interceptions. Shaw, who stepped into play cornerback after an injury in the Kohawk secondary, has now recorded picks in back-to-back games and is up to four in 2022. Alex Aitchison was also a force on the defensive line for Coe, recording four tackles, three TFLs and 1.5 sacks to bring his season total to 11 QB stops. Chase Kruse and LaDainian Linnear recorded the other two interceptions for Coe and added five and three tackles each. 

Up next: The Kohawks will return to the gridiron next Saturday, November 5 for its final road game of the season, taking on Nebraska Wesleyan at 1 PM in Lincoln.
