William Paterson Can’t Capitalize on Fourth-Quarter Chances, Drops 14-9 Decision to Rowan

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson football team (4-3, 1-2 NJAC) couldn't capitalize on its fourth-quarter chances, allowing Rowan (4-2, 2-1 NJAC) to escape with a 14-9 victory Oct. 15.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Profs turned their first possession into seven points, using a one-yard carry to cap a 13-play, 64-yard drive for a 7-0 edge with 6:25 remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Pioneers later responded with a long drive of their own, converting on third down and later fourth down to keep the sticks moving. Freshman running back Nazir Dale's one-yard run finished off a 13-play, 79-yard possession that used 8:14 on the clock, and sophomore Jorge Leones kicked the PAT for a 7-7 tie with 8:09 left in the second period.
  • Junior linebacker Alajuwon Bell forced a first-down fumble at the WP-31 that was recovered by sophomore defensive lineman Nick Bianco, ending a Rowan threat 92 seconds before halftime.
  • The Profs regained the lead at the 5:25 mark of the third quarter, thanks to a one-yard rush (14-7).
  • A missed Prof field-goal attempt gave the Pioneers the ball at their own 22-yard line with 10:47 to play, and it looked like the drive was over on a Rowan interception, but junior wide receiver Matt Clarke forced a fumble on the play and freshman wide receiver Matthew Spencer recovered it, giving WP new life at its own 34-yard line. A 15-yard Prof personal foul moved the ball to midfield, and a 21-yard Rasheed Woods rush put the Pioneers into the red zone. However, the Pioneers were unable to convert fourth-and-six at the RU-12, turning the ball over on downs.
  • Rowan snapped the ball on fourth down with seven seconds remaining and attempted to run out the clock, but Bell forced the Profs' quarterback out of the back of the end zone with 0:01 on the scoreboard, a safety for William Paterson (14-9). Rowan had to kick off, giving WP one final hope, but the return was ended nearly midfield.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Freshman quarterback Simon Condemi was 7-for-13 for 71 yards and an interception.
