Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team, ranked ninth on D3football.com, earned its 10th straight win over UW-Stout with a 42-21 victory Saturday afternoon at Don and Nona Williams Stadium. The Eagles improve to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blue Devils drop to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
UW-Stout took the opening kickoff and drove to the UWL 36-yard line, but Chase Hughes was stopped by Jack Anderson on fourth-and-one. The Eagles took their opening drive and a 7-0 lead as Cade Garcia threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Matthijs Enters with 5:53 left in the first quarter. Ryan Beirne converted the extra-point. UWL led, 7-0, after the first quarter.
Garcia threw his second touchdown pass of the first half with 11:55 remaining in the second quarter, connecting from 10-yards out for a 14-0 lead. UW-Stout took the ensuing kickoff and scored its first points of the game with 7:53 left in the first half with Sean Borgerding throwing a 12-yard touchdown pass to Bradley Sarauer to cut the deficit to 14-7. UWL quickly responded, scoring on its third play of the next possession as Keyser Helterbrand scored on a 69-yard touchdown run with 6:22 remaining for a 21-7 advantage. Arthur Cox scored on a three-yard run with 3:38 left in the first half on the Blue Devils' next drive to make it 21-14.
The Eagles maintained their lead at 21-14 at halftime after Luke Cool's 28-yard field goal was blocked by UWL's Cade Osborn with :15 remaining. Osborn also recorded an interception in the game, coming with 5:34 left in the third quarter.
On the second play from scrimmage in the second half, Helterbrand scored on a 77-yard run with 14:10 left to give UWL a 28-14 lead. The Eagles' Josh Dorschner intercepted Borgerding with 2:23 remaining in the third quarter and two plays later, Garcia hit Cameron Sorenson with a 14-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-14 with 1:39 left. UW-Stout drove to the UWL 13-yard line, but Aaron Schmitz returned a Borgerding interception 95-yards for a touchdown with 12:45 left in the fourth quarter and a 42-14 lead.
Borgerding threw a two-yard touchdown pass ot Levy Hamer with 10:01 remaining in the game for UW-Stout to finish the scoring and cut it to 42-21. Borgerding threw his fourth interception of the game with 2:30 left as AJ Spychala recorded the interception.
UWL finished with 457 yards of offense Saturday, including 321 rushing and 136 receiving. The Eagles had 22 first downs in the game while going four-of-10 on third-down. UWL won the time of possession, 34:52 to 25:08.
Garcia went eight-of-13 for 103 yards with three touchdowns and one interception while Helterbrand finished three-of-five for 33 yards. Helterbrand had a game-high 182 yards rushing on 14 carries (13.0 average) and two touchdowns. Joey Stutzman finished with 95 yards rushing on 23 attempts. Enters (46 yards) and Stubbendick (33) each had four catches for the Eagles.
UW-Stout totaled 371 yards, including 76 rushing and 295 receiving. The Blue Devils totaled 20 first downs and went three-of-11 on third-down.
Borgerding went 24-of-40 passing for 295 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. Ben Tolkinen had a team-high 33 yards rushing on seven attempts Saturday. Cox had eight receptions for 91 yards.
Schmitz led UWL with nine tackles while Spychala finished with seven. Elijah Alt had six tackles.
Cannon Griner led UW-Stout with 15 tackles. Noah Jungwirth and Scott Gustafson each had 10 tackles for the Blue Devils.
