Spartans Football Spoils Beavers Homecoming with 34 Points in 2nd Half

STORM LAKE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque football team blanked the host Buena Vista University Beavers for three quarters en route to a dominating 46-16 final score.UD trailed at halftime 12-16 before outscoring the hosts on their homecoming 34-0 in the final half of action.

UD grabbed 22 first downs and held BVU to 15. The Spartans found their passing game and ended with 450 yards through the air and pounded out another 141 yards on the ground for a total of 591 yards of offense while the defense held the Beavers to 297 total yards. UD converted 6-14 third down attempts and held BVU to 3-15 third down conversions.

Ben Gultig completed 21-37 attempts for 377 yards and a four touchdown afternoon. K.C. Moore completed 2-3 attempts for 46 yards and Brandon Coppola was 2-4 for 27 yards. They spread the targets to 10 different receivers. Za'Cameron Brice led the receiving corps with eight catches for 120 yards and a touchdown. Wade Sheets grabbed five for 119 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Todd Simmons hauled in four for 84 yards, Torre Butts Jr. had two for 66 yards. Derek-Earl Saint-Hilaire had one for 22 yards, Hunter Preston, one for 17 yards, Spencer Roy one for 15 yards, Gary Young one for five yards, Alex Mathis one for two yards, and Kallion Buckner one for no yards.

Kallion Buckner led the attack on the ground with 15 rushes for 95 yards and a touchdown. John Allen carried it five times for 25 yards and Lontrez Duckworth four runs for 23 yards.

Defensively Stone Gorman led with four solo tackles and two assisted tackles including an interception with a return of eight  yards. Three tied with five tackles. Colton Pedersen had five, Dalton Wood had five with a pass break-up, and Ben Rashid had five with a sack for a loss of nine yards.

Conner Halla punted eight times for 185 yards. Torre Butts Jr. returned four punts for 28 yards and two kick-off returns for 29 yards. Liam Smith finished the afternoon with eight kick-offs for 470 yards for an average of 58.8 yards and was 4-6 in extra points.

The Spartans (2-3 overall, 2-1 in A-R-C) return home to host the Simpson College Storm next week on Chalmers Field at 4:00 p.m. The Storm lost on Oct. 1 to the Luther College Norse by a 33-23 margin.
