Dominant Second Half Lifts No. 16 R-MC Football past GC

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Andrew Ihle (Apex, N.C./Middle Creek) rushed for five touchdowns, one away from the school record, junior Kwasi Clarke (Reigelwood, N.C./North Brunswick) had a career-best 143 rushing yards with two scores, and the Yellow Jacket defense held the Quakers to minus-26 yards of offense in the second half, as No. 16 Randolph-Macon posted a 48-10 victory over Guilford on Saturday afternoon in the ODAC opener for both teams.

The Basics:

Score: Randolph-Macon 48, Guilford 19

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Day Field

Records: Randolph-Macon 4-0, 1-0 ODAC; Guilford 1-3, 0-1 ODAC

How it Happened:

  • The Quakers were forced to punt on their first possession and a 17-yard return by senior JoJo Marinella (Franklin, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) gave the Yellow Jackets the ball on the GC33. Clarke capped the five-play drive with a two-yard scoring run. A missed extra point kick gave the home team a 6-0 advantage less than five minutes into the contest.
  • GC would tally the next two TDs, taking a 13-6 lead late in the first period.
  • Senior Cade Jones (Wilmington N.C./Eugene Ashley) a 32-yard kickoff return to give R-MC the ball on its own 47. Ihle would score from five yards out early in the second stanza as the Yellow Jackets tied it at 13-13.
  • A 22-yard punt return by Marinella gave R-MC the ball on the GC36. Ihle went in from two yards away as the Yellow Jackets took a 20-13 lead with 10:18 left in the second quarter.
  • The Quakers scored their third touchdown with 29 seconds left in the first half. A missed kick kept R-MC on top 20-19 at the break.
  • The Yellow Jackets took the second half kickoff and drove 65 yards in seven plays with Ihle going in from nine yards out as R-MC went up 27-19 four minutes into the third period.
  • Clarke had a 67-yard dash for a TD near the midway point of the quarter to extend the advantage to 34-19.
  • Ihle added a three-yard scoring run with 1:47 left in the third period to give R-MC a 41-19 lead.
  • Ihle's final TD was a 13-yard scamper on a 4th-and-3 play with 4:10 left in the contest to make the final 48-19.

By The Numbers:

  • R-MC had 524 yards of total offense, including a season-high on the ground. Clarke had 13 carries for 143 yards, while Ihle rushed 13 times as well for 83 yards.
  • GC ran the ball 28 times for minus-30 yards.
