Football Scores Early and Often in Homecoming Victory

Alma, MI – Alma Football hosted Martin Luther College on September 24th on homecoming weekend. Alma was dominant in a 69-0 shutout win.

Alma scored on the opening drive. It was Eddie Willaims on a 29 yard run to cap off a 7 play 73 yard drive. Moments later Gage Krueger hauled in a 42 yard pass from Carter St. John, taking it to the house to make the score 14-0. It Nate Goralski who grabbed a 13 yard pass from a scrambling Trent Devereaux. With the score at 21-0, it was Eddie Williams with a 10 yard rushing touchdown. Alma would strike twice more to open the second quarter with rudhing scores from Vernonell Smith Jr. and Ja'Martae Hogan, bringing the score to 41-0. Another Eddie Williams 59 yard score on the ground brought the Scots a 48 point lead heading into the locker room. The second half would feature the depth of Alma's roster, with over half of Alma's players seeing the field of play. Davin Reif connected on a pass with Joey Shallow for a score, and rushing touchdowns from Brenden Coulter and Tyler Walters would cap the scoring at 69-0.

Offensively, Alma scored in the 4th most single game points for in program history with 69. Carter St. John led Alma through the air, going 5-7 for 128 yards and a touchdown. On the ground it was Eddie Williams who led the Scots in yards with 123 on 7 carries, also tallying 3 touchdowns. Thomas Johnstone paced the receiving core with 5 receptions for 63 yards.

Defensively, Alma put on quite a show. They held Martin Luther to just 8 first downs, which is the 6th fewest allowed in a single game in program history. The Scots also held a rush heavy offense to just 51 yards on 47 attempts. Luca Mennillo recorded a team high 5 tackles, followed by Odin Soffredine with 4. The hosts also tallied 12 tackles for loss. Evan Eastman was the only Scot to record multiple TFLs with 2. In the turnover department, it was Austin Flowers and Elijah Jackson who recorded interceptions. Julian Mlasko and Aaron Jaciuk forced fumbles, and Will Hampton and Mitch Westman were there on the fumble recoveries.

Josh Hernandez handled most of the PATs, going 6-7, and Kaleb Kindsvatter recorded 6 touchbacks on his 8 kickoffs.

Alma finishes their non-conference slate at 4-0, and opens MIAA play on the road next weekend at Trine.
