Husson Football Drops Regular Season Finale at Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Western New England scored 28 unanswered points as the Golden Bears defeated the Husson University football team, 35-10, on Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium in the Commonwealth Coast Football action. Both teams closed out the regular season as Western New England claimed second place in the standings with a 5-1 conference record while the Eagles finished third with a 4-2 record. Both teams finished with an overall record of 7-3.

The Golden Bears began the game with the football and the drive only lasted five plays as senior Quinn Donovan recovered a fumble. The Eagles capitalized on the turnover with an eight play drive for 73 yards to open the scoring. The biggest play of the drive was a 41-yard pass to senior Jon Bell from sophomore Nic Visser and senior Garrett Poussard punched it in from six yards out. The Golden Bears responded with a 14 play drive for 82 yards as the game was tied after the first quarter. No scoring in the second quarter and as both teams locked down on defense and it was deadlocked at seven at the half. 

The Eagles received the ball to begin the third quarter and an 11 play drive equalled 53 yards and senior Aaron Paradis capped off the drive with a 29-yard field goal. Western New England again responded on the next drive as Ian Britt had a 22-yard rushing touchdown to cap off a six play drive for 69 yards and give the Golden Bears their first lead of the game at 14-10.

The Golden Bears would control the rest of the game scoring a late touchdown in the third quarter and two in the fourth quarter en route to the 35-10 victory. 

HUSSON LEADERS

  • Visser passed for 159 yards and rushed for 17 yards.

  • Poussard rushed for 106 yards on 26 carries and a touchdown. 

  • Bell had five catches for 100 yards. 

  • Senior Kaleb Caron and junior Tucker Buzzell each had eight tackles.

  • Senior Sean Savage with a forced fumble while Donovan picked up a fumble recovery.

WESTERN NEW ENGLAND LEADERS

  • Bryan Kane passed for 148 yards and a score. 

  • Britt rushed for 75 yards on 16 carriers and two scores. 

  • Steven Fedorchak with five catches for 72 yards and a touchdown as he also had 36 passing yards. 

  • Joshua Salem led the defense with 15 tackles and two tackles for losses. 

  • Erich Keutmann with nine tackles and a sack. 

 This concludes the 2021 season for the Husson University Football Program.
