Heuchan Helps No. 24 R-MC Roll past H-SC

More news about: Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Brecht Heuchan (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay) threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns as the 24th-ranked Randolph-Macon football team defeated Hampden-Sydney for the eighth straight time, a 37-14 victory in the 126th edition of The Game.

The Basics:

Score: Randolph-Macon 37, Hampden-Sydney 14

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Day Field

Records: Randolph-Macon 9-1, 5-1 ODAC; H-SC 5-5, 4-2 ODAC

How it Happened:

  • The Tigers took the opening kickoff and drove to the RMC32, but the Yellow Jacket defense stopped H-SC on fourth down and took over on downs. R-MC moved to the HSC9, where senior Chris Vidal (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest) nailed a 26-yard field goal with 1:54 left in the first quarter. The 16-play drive of 59 yards took 9:50.
  • H-SC hit a long TD pass later in the period to take a 7-3 lead with 38 seconds remaining in the period.
  • R-MC responded by driving 67 yards in 12 plays, as junior Nick Hale (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) reached the end zone from 18 yards out to give the Yellow Jackets the lead for good at 10-7.
  • The Yellow Jacket defense held the Tigers to three-and-out and took over on their own 19. Heuchan hit junior David Wallis (Cedar Point, N.C./Croatan) in stride for an 81-yard touchdown pass to give the home team a 17-7 lead with 6:55 left in the second period.
  • H-SC was held without a first down on its next possession. The Tiger punter mishandled the snap and his knee touched the ground at the HSC16. Vidal would connect on a 27-yard field goal as the lead grew to 20-7 with 3:11 left until halftime.
  • The Tigers did not pick up a first down on their ensuing possession and the Yellow Jackets took over on their own 47 following a short punt. Heuchan found Wallis on a 14-yard scoring strike with 13 seconds left in the half as R-MC led 27-7 at intermission.
  • The Yellow Jackets took the second-half kickoff and drove to the HSC19, where Vidal nailed a 36-yard field goal to give R-MC a 30-7 lead five minutes into the third quarter.
  • On the final play of the third period, Heuchan hit senior Joey Hunt (Olney, Md./Sherwood) with a 33-yard scoring strike as the Yellow Jackets went up 37-7.
  • H-SC would tally the final points with 2:36 left to make the final 37-14.

By The Numbers

  • R-MC had 421 yards of total offense, with 272 through the air and 149 on the ground.
  • Hunt had five catches for 72 yards and one score. Wallis had three receptions for 99 yards and two TDs.
  • Hale led the ground attack with 11 carries for 72 yards and one touchdown. Senior Justin DeLeon (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) had 16 carries for 68 yards.
  • Senior Tyler DeBerry (Greensboro, N.C./Page) led the defense with 11 tackles, including eight solo stops. He had 1.5 tackles for loss, one quarterback sack, one forced fumble and one quarterback hurry.
  • The Yellow Jackets had the advantage in time of possession, holding the ball for 31:40.

For The Record

  • R-MC has won eight straight and 10 of the past 11 meetings with H-SC.
  • Vidal hit four extra point kicks, giving him 172 for his career, a program and ODAC record. Vidal went 3 for 3 on field goals to give him 34 for his career. That is the second-highest total in ODAC history, trailing the 36 by former Yellow Jacket Josh Storm (2009-12).
  • DeLeon surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing plateau for the season with 1,005 yards. It marked the 16th time a Yellow Jacket reached 1,000 yards on the ground in a season and the eighth time in the past nine full seasons.
