Special Teams Woes Doom Wilmington in Loss at No. 25 John Carroll

More news about: Wilmington

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - John Carroll University held a 33-0 halftime lead and defeated the Wilmington College football team 50-7 in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) game at Don Shula Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Special teams plagued the Fightin' Quakers early as the Blue Streaks went up 2-0 on a safety on fourth down. A JCU touchdown followed, and after both teams punted cleanly once, JCU blocked a punt that setup a short field. Three straight completions from Jake Floriea to Brennan Fugh put the hosts on the two-yard line, and Floriea connected with Tadas Tatarunas for the touchdown. A field goal was the final play of the first quarter as JCU took a 19-0 lead.

On Wilmington's next drive, history repeated itself as the Blue Streak blocked another punt. This one was recovered for a touchdown. Another JCU stop followed, and the hosts milked seven minutes off the clock and went up 33-0 on the 15-play drive.

The third quarter opened well for the visitors as a defense stop was followed by the one touchdown for Wilmington on the day. Ace Taylor took a reverse and instead of running, he threw it to Itika Wynn Jr. for a 63-yard touchdown. JCU scored on the following drive to put the game away.

John Carroll doubled Wilmington in yards gained from scrimmage (430-207) as well as converting 5-of-13 (38 percent) of its third-down conversions. Neither team had much success running the ball as the two teams combined for less than 100 yards on the ground.

Floriea completed 26-of-40 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns. Fugh caught 10 passes for 162 yards and one score while Devin Limerick hauled in six receptions for 80 yards and a score. Derek Larimer completed 12-of-24 passes for 116 yards and, just like Floriea, threw a single interception. Wynn Jr. had five catches for 112 yards and the touchdown.

Defensively, Tre'Quez Parks finished with nine tackles while Tavion Bryant and Eli Berner each had one sack. Bricker Thiel and Daniel Garcar both had seven tackles for a JCU defense that had six sacks.

Wilmington returns to Williams Stadium for one final time next Saturday, Nov. 6, for a Senior Day matchup with Capital University. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
