Football Extends Regular-Season Winning Streak to 20

More news about: Union

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The #11/13 Union College football team reached the end zone on its first five drives as the Dutchmen extended their regular-season winning streak to a program-record 20 games with a 35-9 victory over Liberty League foe University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

With the victory, Union (7-0, 3-0 in Liberty League) surpassed the previous record streak of 19 regular-season games set between the 1992-94 seasons. The last regular-season loss for the Dutchmen came more than three years ago on October 13, 2018 at Ithaca College.

Senior William Bellamy quarterbacked an efficient Union offense on the day, finishing 18-of-22 for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Ike Irabor and first-year Jonathan Anderson did plenty of damage on the ground in the first half, as Irabor ran for 86 yards and two scores while Anderson finished with 78 yards and a score. Senior Andre Ross Jr. led the aerial attack with six catches for 86 yards and a touchdown.

After moving Rochester (2-5, 1-3 Liberty League) back four yards on the game's opening drive, Union marched 73 yards in 12 plays to take the lead. Anderson had four rushes for 26 yards on the drive, which was capped by an Irabor four-yard touchdown run. After another Rochester three-and-out, Bellamy completed six straight passes for 52 yards to begin the second drive, which finished with four straight Irabor rushes - the last being a three-yard burst to make it 14-0 Dutchmen.

An interception by first-year Azarai Lewis set up Union in UR territory for its third possession, a methodical 14-play drive that ended with a six-yard TD plunge by Anderson. The visitors then put an exclamation mark on the half with an eight-play, 92-yard march right before halftime, with Bellamy tossing a nine-yard touchdown to Ross Jr. to put Union up 28-0 at the half.

Union completely dominated Rochester in the opening 30 minutes, outgaining the Yellow Jackets 294-19, including a 142-8 edge on the ground. The Dutchmen were also a perfect 10-for-10 on third downs in the first half.

The visitors came out of the locker rooms with another long drive down the field, taking up nearly half of the third quarter with a 15-play drive that culminated in a 25-yard TD pass from Bellamy to junior Finn Duran. Rochester scored its only touchdown of the game on the next possession, as multiple Union penalties and a pair of fourth-down conversions helped the Yellow Jackets find the end zone for the first and only time.

Junior Conor McVey and first-year Jon Rust helped Union grind out the clock in the fourth quarter, combining for 58 yards on 21 carries.

Union finished the game with 454 yards of total offense, averaging 6.2 yards per play, while limiting Rochester to 57 yards on the ground and 75 through the air. Senior Daniel Gioioso led the defense with five tackles.

The Dutchmen will return home to host Hobart College for Homecoming and Family Weekend next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
