UNE, Husson to play the 'Lobster Trap Game' on Saturday

More news about: University of New England

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England and Husson University will compete in the inaugural Lobster Trap Game when the football programs meet for a Commonwealth Coast Conference clash on Saturday (Oct. 23) at UNE Blue Storm Stadium. The trophy, labeled as 'The Trap,' will go to the winning side each year.

"We wanted a trophy that would be unique to Maine," commented UNE head coach Mike Lichten. "Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin play for the CBB Trophy, the University of Maine and New Hampshire play for the Brice-Cowell Musket, and we are proud to play our part in adding to the history of football in this state each year with our new trophy game against Husson."

Husson head coach Nat Clark shares a similar sentiment. "We think it is fitting that Husson and UNE play for a trophy similar to the CBB Trophy. We are excited to battle for the inaugural 'Trap' trophy and continue the in-state rivalry we have started with UNE. Since our program began in 2003, it was a goal to play an in-state school, and to now play for a trophy makes it even more special."

One of the more recognizable themes associated with Maine, the retired lobster trap trophy is three feet long, weighing approximately 20 pounds. It detaches from the trophy base, which will have plaques affixed to display the results of the rivalry games.

The Nor'easters and Eagles have squared off twice previously -- 2018 in Biddeford, and 2019 in Bangor (as new CCC foes). Husson won the initial game, 47-7, in front of a crowd of 2,042 attending UNE's first-ever home varsity contest. The Nor'easters leveled the series the next year, flipping a 2nd-quarter touchdown deficit into a 31-21 victory before 2,300 fans at the Winkin Sports Complex.

Kick-off for Husson (4-2, 1-1 CCC) and UNE (3-2, 1-1 CCC) is 1 p.m. Both squads come in off of conference setbacks their last time out. Each dropped the season opener, as well, while winning everything in between.
